REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1981-87 Models

The inhibitor switch is a part of the shift control lever assembly; partial disassembly of the shift control lever is necessary for replacement of this switch. The back-up light switch is an integral part of the inhibitor switch.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the shift control lever from the vehicle, as described later in this section.
  4.
  5. Place the shift control lever assembly on a clean work table. Remove the shift lever knob setscrew.
  6.

The threaded portion of the setscrew is nylon coated to prevent loosening. Discard the old setscrew and purchase a new one for reassembly.

  1. Remove the knob from the lever.
  2.
  3. Remove the 4 screws holding the indicator upper cover onto the lever assembly, then remove the upper cover, the slider and the lower cover (with indicator light) from the shift lever bracket.
  4.
  5. Remove the 2 screws holding the inhibitor switch, then remove the switch from the shift lever bracket.
  6.

To install:
  1. Insert the projected portion of the inhibitor switch into the slot in the shift lever and attach these parts to the shift lever bracket, leaving the setscrews semi-tight.
  2.

These setscrews are to be fully tightened after the adjustment procedure. For more information, refer to the neutral safety switch adjustment procedure later in this section.

  1. Apply a small amount of grease to the projected portion of the inhibitor switch. Do not grease the points within the switch case, otherwise poor contact will be the result.
  2.
  3. Install the indicator light on the lower cover, then attach the lower cover, the slider and the upper cover onto the shift lever bracket. Tighten the setscrews only finger-tight.
  4.
  5. Place the shift lever into each transmission gear position. Adjust the position of the upper cover so the red colored mark on the slider aligns with the window in the indicator plate.
  6.
  7. Install the knob onto the shift lever handle, then tighten the new knob setscrew until snug.
  8.
  9. Check that the free-play of the push button is within 0.028-0.048 in. (0.71-1.22mm) when the shift lever is in the P or N position. If the amount of free-play deviates from the range specified, adjust the shift lever linkage, as described earlier in this section.
  10.
  11. Check that the shift lever operates smoothly in all ranges without binding.
  12.
  13. Install the shift lever assembly into the vehicle.
  14.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.

Fig. Fig. 2: To adjust the neutral safety switch, align the neutral standard line (1) and the switch groove (3), then tighten the adjusting bolt (2)

The neutral safety switch for the late model transmissions is mounted onto the transmission at the shift lever. The back-up switch is incorporated into this assembly.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.
  3. Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels, then set the transmission select lever in the passenger's compartment to the N position.
  4.
  5. If necessary for access to the underside of the vehicle, apply the parking brake, block the rear wheels, raise and safely support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the shift linkage from the transmission control shaft lever (A), as described later in this section.
  8.
  9. Unstake the lockwasher (B) and remove it from the neutral safety switch (D).
  10.
  11. Remove the neutral safety switch mounting nut and bolts (C), then pull the switch from the transmission shaft.
  12.
  13. Remove the lockwasher and grommet from the transmission control shaft.
  14.

To install:
  1. Position a new bushing and lockwasher onto the transmission control shaft.
  2.
  3. Using the control shaft lever, turn the manual lever of the neutral safety switch counterclockwise as far as it will go, then turn it clockwise 2 notches. The switch should now be in Neutral.
  4.
  5. Insert the neutral safety switch onto the manual valve shaft and temporarily tighten the adjusting bolt.
  6.
  7. Install the lockwasher and tighten the nut to 5 ft. lbs. (6.8 Nm).
  8.
  9. Align the neutral standard line (1) and the switch groove (3), then tighten the adjusting bolt (2) to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  10.
  11. Bend the at least 2 of the tabs on the lockwasher.
  12.
  13. Install the control shaft lever onto the switch, then tighten the attaching nut to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  14.
  15. Attach the shift linkage to the control shaft lever, as described later in this section.
  16.
  17. Lower the vehicle, if necessary.
  18.
  19. Set the transmission select lever to the P position, then remove the rear wheel blocks.
  20.
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.
  23. Check that the engine will not start in any position except for P or N .
  24.

ADJUSTMENT

1981-87 Models

See Figure 3

Fig. Fig. 3: After adjusting the inhibitor switch, make certain that continuity of the switch is as shown

Adjust the setting of the inhibitor switch if the engine can be started with the shift lever set in any position other than N or P , when the shift linkage is adjusted, or when the shift lever assembly is disassembled (this includes removal of the inhibitor switch itself).

  1. Remove the interior trim panels from around the transmission shift lever assembly.
  2.
  3. Loosen the 2 screws holding the inhibitor switch to the shift lever bracket, then adjust the setting position of the switch so the center of the moving piece of the switch aligns with the neutral position indicator line on the steel case when the shift lever is set in the N position.
  4.
  5. Tighten the 2 inhibitor mounting screws until snug.
  6.
  7. When the adjustment operation is complete, check the continuity of the inhibitor switch as follows:

With the shift lever in the P or N position, continuity should exist only between the BW circuit terminals

With the shift lever in the R position, continuity should exist only between the RL circuit terminals

With the shift lever in the D , 2 or 1 position, continuity should exist between the Lg circuit terminals only

  8.
  9. If the switch does not function as specified, readjust the switch. If, after readjusting the switch, it still does not function as specified, a new inhibitor switch should be installed.
  10.
  11. Install any trim panels removed earlier.
  12.

Fig. Fig. 4: To adjust the neutral safety switch, loosen the bolt and turn the switch until the groove and neutral basic line are aligned

If the engine will start with the shift selector in any range other than P or N , adjustment is required.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels, then set the transmission select lever in the N position.
  4.
  5. If necessary for access to the underside of the vehicle, raise and safely support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  6.
  7. Loosen the neutral safety switch bolt.
  8.
  9. Align the groove and the neutral basic line by turning the switch.
  10.
  11. Hold the switch in position, then tighten the adjusting bolt to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  12.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.
  15. Set the transmission select lever in the P position and remove the rear wheel blocks.
  16.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.
  19. Make sure the engine can only be started when the transmission select lever is in the P or N positions.
