Some engines are fitted with dry-type cylinder liners or sleeves at the time of manufacture. Some liners are slide-fit into the block. Other liners are press-fit, but can be replaced with the use of special pulling tools at the time of engine reconditioning. When the cylinder bore is integral, that is, part of the block assembly, and if only one or two cylinder bores are damaged, sleeves can be installed in the damaged bores to maintain the standard size. This avoids reboring all the cylinders to an oversize condition.
The damaged cylinders must be bored to a correct dimension to accept the sleeves; and the cylinder or cylinders adjacent to each sleeved cylinder will be distorted slightly when the sleeve is pressed in.
Removable wet cylinder liners are used in some engines. Most wet sleeves require the use of some kind of pulling tool to remove them. Soft metal rings are used at the top and elastomeric rubber rings are used at the base of the liners to seal between the machine surface of the engine block and the liners. The seals prevent coolant from entering the engine lubricating system.
The services of a competent automotive machine shop should be used for the boring of cylinders and installation of liners.
