  1. Open the tailgate and unfasten the tailgate retainer cable from the side panel.
  2.  
  3. Lift the tailgate straight up to release the hinge sections.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tailgate. Inspect the hinge sections, and replace if worn. Inspect the retainer cables, and replace if any wire strands are seen.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Lower the tailgate vertically until the hinge sections engage. Lower the tailgate to a horizontal position and make sure both hinges have engaged completely.
  2.  
  3. Raise the tailgate and connect the retainer cable.
  4.

  1. Lower the tailgate to the horizontal position.
  2.  
  3. Disengage the cable on the right and left sides from the striker bolts. To accomplish this, pull up on the middle of the cable assembly while raising the gate to a 45 degree angle, but be careful not to pinch the cable between the gate and bed.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tailgate from the vehicle by lifting upward on the left side to separate the left hinge assembly, then disengage the right hinge.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the gate to the vehicle by lowering the right hinge assembly into position first, then holding the gate at a 45 degree angle and seating the left hinge assembly.
  2.  
  3. Engage the left and right cables to the striker bolts.
  4.  
  5. Verify proper tailgate latching and operation.
  6.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the access plate from the center-inside of the tailgate. Disconnect and remove the tailgate harness, if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolt, nut, washer and bracket that attach the tailgate checker link to the frame.
  6.  
  7. Scribe alignment marks around the edge of the hinges where they attach to the body of the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. While supporting the tailgate with either a wood block and jack, or with the aid of an assistant, remove the hinge retainer bolts and lower the tailgate.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Clean the surfaces of the hinges with sandpaper to remove any burrs. Lubricate the hinges and the inside of the hole with grease.
  2.  
  3. Balance tailgate on a jack, or have an assistant support it and align the hinges with the mounting holes and scribe marks.
  4.  
  5. Install the hinge retainer bolts hand-tight. Close the tailgate slowly.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the tailgate. Tighten the bolts to 18-25 ft. lbs. (23-32 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Position the checker bracket in place and install the retainer bolts. Tighten the bolts to 14-22 ft. lbs. (18-29 Nm). Attach the link to the checker bracket using the bolt, washer and nut. Tighten the bolt to 21-34 ft. lbs. (27-44 Nm).
  10.  
  11. If equipped, connect the tailgate harness, and install the access plate.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the interior tailgate panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the access plate from the center-inside of the tailgate. Disconnect and remove the tailgate harness.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt and washer that attach the tailgate cable assembly to the frame.
  8.  
  9. Scribe alignment marks around the edge of the hinges where they attach to the body of the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. While supporting the tailgate with either a wood block and jack, or with the aid of an assistant, remove the hinge retainer bolts and remove the tailgate.

To install:

Align the tailgate so the gaps between all of the components are equal; it must be flush with the fenders. Center the tailgate in the opening between the fenders by adjusting the hinges and/or the striker bolts.
