  4.
  5. Disengage the electrical connector from the horn pad.
  6.
  7. Remove the center nut securing the steering wheel to the steering shaft.
  8.
  9. Matchmark the steering wheel to the shaft so the steering wheel can be installed in the same position.
  10.

Never apply a blow to the steering wheel shaft with a hammer or other impact tool, to remove the steering wheel, for the steering shaft may become damaged.

  1. Use a steering wheel puller and remove the steering wheel.
  2.
  3. Remove the steering column upper and lower covers.
  4.
  5. Disengage the combination switch electrical connector near the base of the steering column.
  6.
  7. Remove the combination switch mounting screws and remove the combination switch.
  8.

Fig. Fig. 9: The cable reel must be aligned correctly or the SRS wiring will break, disabling the air bag

CAUTION
The SRS/air bag system must be disabled before the steering wheel and combination switch are removed. Read all SRS information before proceeding with this procedure. Failure to disable the air bag system may result in unnecessary system repairs and possible personal injury. You must disconnect and isolate the battery cables. Do not damage, cut, or attempt to alter the yellow SRS wiring harness.

  1. Remove the air bag module from the vehicle and place it face-up on a bench away from your work area.
  2.

CAUTION
Always carry a live air bag with its trim cover and cushion pointed away from your body. When placing a live air bag on a bench or other surface, always point the trim cover up, away from the surface. Following these precautions will lessen the chance of personal injury if the air bag accidentally deploys.

  1. Disconnect the horn leads.
  2.
  3. Make alignment marks on the steering wheel and steering column shaft.
  4.
  5. Loosen and remove the steering wheel nut. Use tool No. J-29752 or an equivalent steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel.
  6.

The puller bolts may damage the air bag cable reel if they are threaded too deeply into the steering wheel.

  1. Remove the shift lever trim console.
  2.
  3. Remove the radio trim piece. It is secured by two screws and four clips.
  4.
  5. Unbolt the hood latch bracket from the lower dashboard cover.
  6.
  7. Remove the lower dashboard cover and driver's knee bolster.
  8.
  9. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers. Be careful with the wiring harness that runs through the lower cover-it contains the SRS wiring.
  10.
  11. Remove the retaining screws and then remove the combination switch and SRS cable reel assembly from the steering column.
  12.

The combination switch and cable reel assembly cannot be disassembled. They are serviced and replaced as one complete assembly.

To install:
  1. Install the combination switch and cable reel assembly onto the steering column shaft.
  2.
  3. Reconnect the switch wiring harnesses.
  4.
  5. Install the lower steering column cover, making sure that the SRS wiring is routed correctly and not pinched. Install the upper steering column cover.
  6.
  7. Install the radio trim piece.
  8.
  9. Install the shift lever trim console.
  10.
  11. Install the dashboard lower cover.
  12.
  13. Check the alignment of the SRS cable reel.
    1. Turn the cable reel clockwise to its fully locked position. Stop turning the cable reel as soon as you feel resistance. Don't turn the cable reel past the point at which you begin to feel resistance to its rotation.
    2.
    3. Turn the cable reel about three turns in the opposite direction until the pointer on the cable reel is alignment with the neutral mark.
    4.

  14.
  15. Align the steering wheel-to-shaft matchmarks. Install the steering wheel and tighten the nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm). Reconnect the horn leads.
  16.
  17. Verify that none of the combination switch or air bag wiring has been pinched or kinked during the installation process.
  18.
  19. Install the air bag onto the steering wheel.
  20.
  21. Turn the ignition to the ON position, but don't start the engine. The AIRBAG warning light should turn on and flash on and off for seven seconds, and then turn off. This indicator light sequence indicates that the SRS system is functioning normally. If the AIRBAG light doesn't come on, or stays on longer than seven seconds, the system must be diagnosed.
  22.
  23. Check the operation of the combination switch controls.
