1981-85 Pick-Up

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the knobs from the radio and ventilation controls.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radio from the dash assembly. Refer to Chassis Electrical for radio removal and installation steps.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retainer screws from around the instrument cluster panel.
  8.  
  9. Lift the cluster panel off and remove the instrument cluster retainer screws. Lift the cluster assembly out slightly and disconnect the speedometer cable and gauge wire harnesses.
  10.  
  11. Remove the side ventilation retainer screws at the base of the assembly. Using a small prytool, carefully pry out the side ventilation ducts.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the ventilation control assembly retainer screws. The assembly does not have to be disconnected.
  14.  
  15. Remove the dash retainer screws at the top and side of the panel assembly. Then remove the dash retainer panels from the bottom of the vehicle. Refer to the illustration for the exact location of the bolts.
  16.  
  17. With all the retainer bolts removed, slowly pull the dash assembly forward, then remove it from the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. If you wish to separate the top and bottom portion of the dash assembly, remove the retainer screws at the base of the instrument cluster housing, then carefully separate the halves.
  20.  

To install:
  1. If the dash assembly was separated, position the halves together and secure with retainer screws at the instrument cluster housing.
  2.  
  3. Position the dash assembly below the windshield, and carefully push toward the engine to engage the dash-to-firewall retainer clips. Once in place, install the dash retainer screws to the top, side and bottom of the assembly.
  4.  
  5. Position the ventilation control assembly flush with the dash panel, and secure in place with the retainer screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the side ventilation ducts and secure in place with the retainer screws.
  8.  
  9. Attach the speedometer cable and gauge wire harness to the instrument cluster.
  10.  
  11. Position the instrument cluster to the dash panel and secure in place with the retainer screws.
  12.  
  13. Install the cluster panel and retainer screws.
  14.  
  15. Install the radio and components in the dash panel.
  16.  
  17. Install the ventilation and radio knobs.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable. Test all switches, lights and gauges to make sure everything functions correctly.
  20.  

1984-94 Trooper

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the retainer screws from around the instrument cluster meter hood.
  4.  
  5. Lift the meter hood off and remove the instrument cluster retainer screws. Lift the cluster assembly out slightly and disconnect the speedometer cable and gauge wire harnesses.
  6.  
  7. Remove the parcel tray, or if equipped, combination gauge assembly from the center of the dash panel, by removing the Allen head bolts from the base of the tray/gauge panel. If equipped with gauges, lift the gauges out and unfasten the wire harnesses from the back of the panel.
  8.  
  9. Open the glove box and remove the retainer screws from around the rim of the assembly. When all the screws are removed, slide the glove box out and place aside.
  10.  
  11. Unfasten the ventilation control assembly retainer screws. The assembly does not have to be disconnected.
  12.  
  13. Remove the radio from below the dash assembly. Refer to Chassis Electrical for radio removal and installation steps.
  14.  
  15. Using a small prytool, carefully pry out the side ventilation ducts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 4 dash retainer bolts at the top of the panel assembly. Then remove the 4 dash retainer panels from the left and right side of the vehicle. Refer to the illustration for the exact location of the bolts.
  18.  
  19. With all the retainer bolts removed, slowly pull the dash assembly forward, then remove it from the vehicle.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Position the dash assembly below the windshield, and carefully push toward the engine to engage the dash-to-firewall retainer clips. Once in place, install the dash retainer bolts to the top and bottom of the assembly. Tighten the retainer bolts to 6-9 ft. lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the side ventilation ducts.
  4.  
  5. Install the radio and components below the dash panel.
  6.  
  7. Position the ventilation control assembly flush with the dash panel, and secure in place with the retainer screws.
  8.  
  9. Slide the glove box into the dash assembly, and secure in place with the retainer screws.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with combination gauges, attach the wire harnesses to the assembly. Install the combination gauge or parcel tray assembly to the dash panel, and secure in place with the Allen head retainer screws.
  12.  
  13. Attach the speedometer cable and gauge wire harness to the instrument cluster.
  14.  
  15. Position the instrument cluster to the dash panel and secure in place with the retainer screws.
  16.  
  17. Install the cluster meter hood and retainer screws.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable. Test all switches, lights and gauges to make everything functions correctly.
  20.  

1986-94 Pick-Up; 1990-94 Amigo and Rodeo

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with an Air Bag, disarm the Air Bag system. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Suspension & Steering for steering wheel removal and installation steps. Store the Air Bag face up.
  4.  
  5. Use a small prytool and remove the uppermost grille from the left and right sides of the dash panel. Use a suitable socket, remove the dash panel retainer nuts from within the recess.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retainer screws from around the instrument cluster meter hood.
  8.  
  9. Lift the meter hood off and disconnect the speedometer cable and gauge wire harnesses.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine hood release cable.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering column under cover, fuse box retainer screws, lower reinforcement, speaker grille and speaker by removing the necessary retainer screws.
  14.  
  15. Open the glove box and depress the fixing pins. Lower the box and remove the retainer screws from around the rim of the assembly. When all the screws are removed, slide the glove box out and place aside.
  16.  
  17. Remove the ventilation control system knobs. Carefully pry off the trim plate, disconnecting the harness from the rear, and place aside. Unfasten the ventilation control assembly retainer screws. Push the control assembly toward the firewall, and tag and disconnect the cables attached.
  18.  
  19. Remove the dash retainer nuts and bolts at the top, side and bottom of the panel assembly.
  20.  
  21. With all the retainer bolts removed, slowly pull the dash assembly forward, then remove it from the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Position the dash assembly below the windshield, and carefully push toward the engine to engage the dash-to-firewall retainer clips. Once in place, install the dash retainer nuts and bolts to the top, side and bottom of the assembly. Tighten the retainer nuts and bolts to 6-9 ft. lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the ventilation cables to the control assembly. Position the ventilation control assembly flush with the dash panel, and secure in place with the retainer screws. Attach the trim panel and wire harness. Install the control knobs.
  4.  
  5. Slide the glove box into the dash assembly, and secure in place with the retainer screws. Depress the fixing pins and push the glove box into position.
  6.  
  7. Position and install using retainer screws the steering column under cover, fuse box, lower reinforcement, speaker grille and speaker.
  8.  
  9. Position the engine hood release cable handle, and install the retainer screws.
  10.  
  11. Attach the speedometer cable and gauge wire harness to the instrument cluster.
  12.  
  13. Position the instrument cluster to the dash panel and secure the meter hood with retainer screws.
  14.  
  15. Install the uppermost dash panel retainer nuts, and tighten to 13-15 ft. lbs. (17-19 Nm). When tight, install the grille over the hole.
  16.  
  17. Install the steering wheel. Arm the Air Bag system.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable. Test all switches, lights and gauges to make everything functions correctly.
  20.  

1995-96 Rodeo

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disarm the Air Bag system, if so equipped.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Suspension & Steering for steering wheel removal and installation steps.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ashtray from the dash panel. Remove the retainer screw from the rear of the ashtray assembly. Remove the retainer screws from the top of the pocket above the ashtray. Slowly remove the lower cluster/ashtray assembly. When the assembly is out far enough, disconnect the wire harnesses attached to the rear of the panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the glove box door retainer screws, then remove the glove box door.
  10.  
  11. Remove the glove box compartment retainer screws, then slide the compartment out of the dash panel. Detach the glove compartment interior light harness.
  12.  
  13. Working from inside the glove box opening, detach the passenger side Air Bag retainer nuts, then remove the Air bag assembly. Store the Air bag face up.
  14.  
  15. Remove the driver and passenger side lower dash trim panel retainer screws and bolts. Remove the trim panels and place aside. Remove the driver side lower reinforcement panel and retainer screws.
  16.  
  17. Remove the retainer screws from around the instrument cluster, radio, and center vents. Carefully remove the instrument panel trim panel. Detach the wire harnesses from the switches in the trim panel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the radio from the dash panel. Refer to the procedure in Chassis Electrical .
  20.  
  21. Remove the instrument cluster retainer screws. Pull the cluster assembly out enough to access the speedometer cable and cluster wire harnesses. Tag and disconnect the wire harnesses and speedometer cable. Remove the cluster assembly and place aside.
  22.  
  23. Remove the heater/ventilation control assembly trim panel and dash light harness. Remove the heater/ventilation control panel retainer screws. Push the control panel into the dash panel assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the attachment screws from the top, side and bottom of the dash panel. Carefully pull the dash panel forward, detaching it from the retainer clips under the windshield. Check to make sure no wire harnesses or heater/ventilation cables are caught in the assembly. Remove the dash panel from the vehicle, and place aside
  26.  

To install:
  1. Install the dash panel to the vehicle, making sure the dash panel engages the retainer clips below the windshield. Before installing any retainer hardware, check and make sure no wires are caught in the assembly. Position the heater/ventilation control panel to the opening in the dash panel. Install the retainer screws to secure the control panel in place.
  2.  
  3. Install the dash panel retainer screws at the top, side and bottom of the assembly. Tighten the retainer screws to 6-9 ft. lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the heater/ventilation trim panel and dash light harness.
  6.  
  7. Install the radio to the dash panel.
  8.  
  9. Attach the instrument cluster wire harnesses and speedometer cable to the rear of the cluster assembly. Work the cluster into the dash panel, and secure with retainer screws.
  10.  
  11. Attach the wire harnesses to the switches in the dash trim panel. Position the dash assembly trim panel to the dash and install the retainer screws around the instrument cluster, radio and center vents.
  12.  
  13. Install the passenger side Air Bag, and secure in place with the retainer nuts.
  14.  
  15. Connect the glove compartment interior light harness to the light. Insert the glove compartment into the dash opening, and install the retainer screws.
  16.  
  17. Install the driver side lower reinforcement panel, and secure in place with the retainer screws. Tighten the screws to 6-9 ft. lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the passenger and driver side lower trim panel. Secure the panels in place with the retainer screws.
  20.  
  21. Position the glove compartment door to the dash panel and install the door retainer screws.
  22.  
  23. Insert the lower cluster trim panel into the dash assembly and secure in place with retainer screws. Do not forget to install the retainer screw to the rear of the ashtray compartment.
  24.  
  25. Install the steering wheel and center pad. If equipped with an Air Bag, connect the Air Bag.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable and arm the Air Bag system.
  28.  
  29. Check and make sure all dash function work correctly. This include the radio, dash lights, heater/ventilation control and instrument cluster gauges and warning lights.

1995-96 Trooper

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with an Air Bag, disarm the Air Bag system. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Suspension & Steering for steering wheel removal and installation steps. If equipped with an Air Bag, store the Air Bag face up.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front center console assembly, by removing the manual transmission shift knob, if equipped, and the transfer knob, then the side retainer screws. Lift the console assembly off, and place aside.
  6.  
  7. Remove the driver and passenger side lower trim panel retainer screws and panel assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Remove the driver side reinforcement panel by removing the retainer screws.
  10.  
  11. Pry off the grille assemblies from both sides of the dash panel, and remove the retainer screws from inside the grille opening.
  12.  
  13. Remove the glove box door by unfastening the retainer screws. Remove the glove compartment retainer screws. Slide the compartment assembly out, and detach the glove box light harness.
  14.  
  15. Working from inside the glove box opening, remove the passenger side Air bag retainer nuts, and remove the Air Bag assembly. Store the Air Bag face up.
  16.  
  17. Remove the instrument trim panel retainer screws from around the instrument cluster, radio and center vents. Pull the vent forward, and detach the wire harness from the rear of the switches installed to the trim panel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the retainer screws securing the ventilation control panel to the dash assembly. Pull the control panel forward, and unfasten the connectors.
  20.  
  21. Remove the radio from the dash panel. Refer to Chassis Electrical for removal and installation steps.
  22.  
  23. Remove the retainer screws from around the instrument cluster. Pull the cluster forward and unfasten the speedometer cable and wire harnesses attached to the cluster assembly. Remove the instrument cluster and place aside.
  24.  
  25. Remove the dash panel retainer nuts and bolts from top, bottom and middle of the dash assembly. Carefully pull the dash panel forward and out of the vehicle.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Position the dash assembly below the windshield, and carefully push toward the engine to engage the dash-to-firewall retainer clips. Once in place, install the dash retainer nuts and bolts to the top, bottom and middle of the assembly. Tighten the retainer nuts and bolts to 6-9 ft. lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the wire harnesses and speedometer cable to rear of the instrument cluster. Work the instrument cluster into position, and secure in place with the retainer screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the radio to the dash panel.
  6.  
  7. Attach the wire harness to the ventilation control panel. Work the control panel into position in the dash, and secure with the retainer screws.
  8.  
  9. Fasten the wire harnesses to the dash trim panel switches. Install the trim panel to the dash assembly, and install the retainer screws around the instrument cluster, radio and center vents.
  10.  
  11. Install the passenger side Air Bag, and secure in place with the retainer nuts.
  12.  
  13. Attach the glove box light harness to the glove compartment assembly. Slide the compartment into the dash assembly, and secure in place with retainer screws.
  14.  

Install the glove box door using retainer screws attached at the bottom of the door.

  1. Position the driver side reinforcement bracket to the dash assembly, and install the retainer screws. Tighten the screws to 6-9 ft. lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the driver and passenger lower trim panels, and secure in place with retainer screws.
  4.  
  5. Position the front center console over the shifter assembly, and secure in place with retainer screws. Attach the transfer knob and shifter knob if equipped with a manual transmission.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel. Arm the Air Bag system.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable. Test all switches, lights and gauges to make sure everything functions correctly.
  10.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the Air Bag system, if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Remove the driver side knee bolster and retainer screws. Lift the bolster away from the retainer points and remove the sound insulation from behind.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering column trim panels by removing the retainer screws, and separating the halves.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument cluster trim panel retainer screws. Lift out the trim panel, and place aside.
  10.  
  11. Remove the instrument cluster retainer screws. Pull the cluster assembly forward, and disconnect the wire harnesses and speedometer cable. Remove the cluster assembly from the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the heater/ventilation retainer screws. Pull the control assembly forward, and tag and unfasten the vacuum lines and wire harness.
  14.  
  15. Remove the radio from the dash panel. Refer to Chassis Electrical for removal and installation steps.
  16.  
  17. Remove the storage pocket retainer screws, and remove the storage pocket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the radio speaker grilles followed by the dash speakers.
  20.  
  21. Use a small prytool to remove the center defroster grille from the dash panel.
  22.  
  23. Remove any switches and attached wires from the dash assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the retainer bolts from the top, bottom and side of the dash panel. Pull the dash assembly forward to disengage the assembly from the retainer clips. Remove the panel from the vehicle.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Position the dash panel in the retainer clips below the windshield. Secure the assembly in place with the retainer bolts. Tighten the bolts to 7-11 ft. lbs. ( 9-14 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the center defroster grille in place by evenly pressing the assembly into the dash panel.
  4.  
  5. Attach any switches removed earlier to the dash assembly.
  6.  
  7. Attach the speaker wire harnesses, and install the speaker into the dash panel with the grilles place on top.
  8.  
  9. Connect the vacuum lines and wire harness to the heater/ventilation control panel. Install the control panel assembly to the dash using the retainer screws.
  10.  
  11. Install the radio to the dash assembly.
  12.  
  13. Insert the storage pocket into the dash, and secure in place with the retainer screws.
  14.  
  15. Attach the speedometer cable and wire harness to the back of the instrument cluster. Work the cluster assembly into place in the dash panel, and secure with retainer screws.
  16.  
  17. Install the instrument cluster trim panel, and secure in place with retainer screws.
  18.  
  19. Position the steering column trim pieces on top of and underneath the column assembly. Snap the halves together, and secure in place with the retainer screws.
  20.  
  21. Place the sound insulation to the inside of the driver side knee bolster. Position the knee bolster to the dash assembly and attach the retainer screws.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable and arm the Air Bag. Check and make sure all dash switches, lights and gauges function properly.
