Cover the quadrant box or extension housing hole to prevent the entry of foreign material into the transmission.

To install:
  1. Insert the end of the gear shift lever into the transmission housing.
  2.
  3. Install the gear shift lever mounting bolts and tighten to 13-16 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the dust cover and grommet to the transmission housing.
  6.
  7. Install the front console.
  8.

1996 HOMBRE (NV1500)

See Figures 3 and 4

  1. Remove the 10 screws securing the shift tower boot to the floor panel and insulator.
  2.
  3. Unscrew the shift lever from the transmission shift housing lever.
  4.

It is not a good idea to remove the transmission shift lever housing. If, however, the procedure calls for the shift housing removal, perform this procedure exactly. Do not disassemble the shift housing. Internal parts for this shift housing are not available. The shift housing is serviced as a unit.

  1. If the shift housing assembly must be removed, heed these warnings and follow this procedure:

Ensure that the shift lever is positioned in the mechanical 3rd or 4th gear prior to removal of the shift housing from the transmission. The transmission must remain in this state while the housing is removed.

Do not disassemble the transmission shift housing. Internal parts this part are not available. Opening the shift housing voids the factory warranty.

When removing the shift housing from the transmission, use the exposed bolts on the base of the housing. Do not use the bolts under the rubber boot located at the top of the housing.

    1. Position the shift lever in 3rd or 4th gear.
    2.
    3. Remove the 4 lower bolts securing the shift housing to the transmission.
    4.
    5. Lift the shift housing up and off the transmission case.
    6.
    7. Remove the rubber insulator from the transmission case.
    8.

Fig. Fig. 4: Make sure to remove the 4 lower bolts, not the upper 4 bolts near the shift lever-removing the upper bolts disassembles the shift lever housing, which voids your factory warranty

To install:
  1. If the shift housing was removed, perform the following:
    1. Install the rubber insulator onto the transmission case.
    2.
    3. Carefully lower the shift housing onto the transmission, making sure it seats flush on the transmission case.
    4.
    5. Install the 4 shift housing retaining bolts to 89 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    6.

  2.

Once the 4 shift housing retaining bolts have been tightened, the shift lever may once again be moved.

  1. Thread the shift lever onto the transmission shift tower lever and tighten until secure.
  2.
  3. Slide the shift lever boot over the shift lever and attach the bottom edge of it to the floor panel and insulator with the 10 attaching screws. Tighten the screws to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  4.

Transfer Case Shift Handle

See Figure 5

  1. Place the transfer shift lever in the N position.
  2.
  3. Remove the front console from the floor panel.
  4.
  5. Pull the shift lever grommet and the dust cover to the top of the gear shift lever.
  6.
  7. Detach the return spring from the transfer shift lever (if equipped), then remove the shift lever cover bolts.
  8.
  9. Pull the gear shift lever out of the transmission housing.
  10.

Cover the quadrant box or extension housing hole to prevent the entry of foreign material into the transmission.

  2.
  3. Install the gear shift lever cover bolts and tighten to 13-16 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm).
  4.

  6.
  7. Install the dust cover and grommet to the transmission housing.
  8.
  9. Install the front console.
