Brake Backing Plate

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Matchmark and remove the brake drum to access the wheel cylinder assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake shoes, springs and other components, and place then on a flat surface. It is a good idea to organize the parts in a pattern to reflect their final installation.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the inlet tube line from the back of the wheel cylinder. Immediately plug or cap the line to prevent system contamination or excessive fluid loss.
  10.  
  11. Loosen and remove the bolts from the rear of the backing plate, then remove the wheel cylinder assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the axle shaft from the differential assembly. Refer to Drive Train for removal and installation steps
  14.  
  15. Loosen and remove the backing plate retainer bolts. Remove the backing plate and gasket, if equipped from the mounting surface.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Position the backing plate and gasket, if equipped and secure in place using the retainer bolts. Tighten the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the axle shaft to the differential. Refer to Drive Train for details.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel cylinder and bolts along with the hydraulic line.
  6.  
  7. Position and secure the brake shoes and assorted springs and components.
  8.  
  9. Attach the brake drum.
  10.  
  11. Bleed the brake system.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel and tire assemblies. Lower the vehicle.
