The vehicles covered by this guide can be identified by their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which is embossed on a plate attached to the top left corner of the instrument panel. The number is visible through the windshield from the outside of the vehicle. The VIN can be broken down into segments in order to ascertain certain information about the truck, as can be seen in the accompanying chart. The VIN is comprised of 17 digits. The digits are broken down into different codes, as follows:

The 1981-88 models are equipped with a paint color code identification plate, located on the upper radiator support near the radiator. This label includes the type of paint and the color number used for the vehicle's original paint from the factory. The 1989-96 Isuzu trucks and sport utility vehicles are equipped with a Vehicle Information Plate instead. The VIP is located on either the center or the right-hand side of the dash wall, inside the engine compartment. The plate lists the VIN, paint information and all production options, as well as special equipment on the vehicle when it was shipped from the factory.
