Steering Angle Sensor Neutral Position
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    After any of the following conditions, check the adjustment of the steering angle sensor neutral position before driving the vehicle:


    CAUTION
    To adjust the neutral position of steering angle sensor, make sure to use the CONSULT-II. (Adjustment cannot be done without CONSULT-II.)



    Replacing ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit)
     
    Removing/installing steering angle sensor
     
    Removing/installing steering components
     
    Removing/installing suspension components
     
    Adjusting wheel alignment
     

  2.  
  3. Stop the vehicle with the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Connect the CONSULT-II and CONSULT-II CONVERTER to the data link connector on the vehicle, and turn the ignition switch ON (do not start engine).
    CAUTION
    If the CONSULT-II is used with no connection of the CONSULT-II CONVERTER, malfunctions might be detected in self-diagnosis depending on the control unit which carry out CAN communication.

  6.  
  7. Touch -ABS-, -WORK SUPPORT- and -ST ANGLE SENSOR ADJUSTMENT- on the CONSULT-II screen in this order.
  8.  
  9. Touch -START-.
    CAUTION
    Do not touch the steering wheel while adjusting the steering angle sensor.

  10.  
  11. After approximately 10 seconds, touch -END-. (After approximately 60 seconds, it ends automatically.)
  12.  
  13. Turn the ignition switch OFF, then turn it ON again.
    CAUTION
    Be sure to carry out above operation.

  14.  
  15. Run the vehicle with the front wheels in the straight-ahead position, then stop.
  16.  
  17. Select -DATA MONITOR-, -SELECTION FROM MENU-, and -STR ANGLE SIG- on the CONSULT-II screen. Then make sure -STR ANGLE SIG- is within 0 ±3.5 deg. If the value is more than specified, repeat steps 3 to 7.
  18.  
  19. Erase memory of the ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit) and the ECM.
  20.  
  21. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  22.  

Removal & Installation




NOTE
Before servicing, or working around, the SRS system, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least three minutes. When servicing, or working around, the SRS system do not work directly in front of the air bag module.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Position the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air bag module.

  9. Remove the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the spiral cable retaining screws. Remove the spiral cable.
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the spiral cable. Do not apply lubricant to the spiral cable.

  14.  
  15. Remove the spiral cable connectors.
    NOTE
    With the steering linkage disconnected, the spiral cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns. The spiral cable can be turned counterclockwise about 2.5 turns from the right end position.

  17. Remove the steering angle sensor from the spiral cable assembly.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to align the spiral cable correctly when installing the steering wheel. Make sure that the spiral cable is in the neutral position.
    NOTE
    The neutral position is detected by turning to the left 2.5 revolutions from the right end position and ending with the knob at the top. The spiral cable may snap due to steering operation if the cable is installed incorrectly. Also, with the steering linkage disconnected the cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns (2.5 from the neutral position to both the left and right).

  5. Adjust the steering angle sensor neutral position.
  6.  
  7. Use the CONSULT-II tool and perform self diagnosis to ensure no malfunction is detected.
    NOTE
    With the steering linkage disconnected, the spiral cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns. The spiral cable can be turned counterclockwise about 2.5 turns from the right end position.

  8.  
  9. Tighten the steering wheel retaining nut to 25 ft. lbs.
  10.  
  11. When reinstalling the air bag module, be sure to use new bolts. Tighten the bolts to 8 ft. lbs.
  12.  
  13. Be sure to adjust the steering angle sensor neutral position.

  15. Adjust the calibration of the yaw rate/side/decal G sensor.

NOTE

  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left and right steering switches.
  8.  
  9. Using the proper Torx head tool, remove the left and right special bolts.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the steering wheel switch sub harness connector. Disconnect the air bag harness connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the air bag module.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering column cover. Disconnect the spiral cable connector and horn connector.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering wheel retaining bolt. Using the proper removal tool, remove the steering wheel.
    NOTE
    Do not tap or bump the steering wheel.

  18.  
  19. Loosen the spiral cable retaining screws. Remove the spiral cable.
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the spiral cable. Do not apply lubricant to the spiral cable.

  20.  
  21. Remove the steering angle sensor from the spiral cable assembly.
    NOTE
    With the steering linkage disconnected, the spiral cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns. The spiral cable can be turned counterclockwise about 2.5 turns from the right end position.

To install:

  7. Be sure to use new retaining screws when installing the air bag module. Torque the special bolts to 11-18 inch lbs.
  8.  
  9. Perform the self diagnosis using the CONSULT-II tool or equivalent to ensure that the entire SRS system is operating properly.
  10.  
  11. Turn the steering wheel completely to the left detent and than to the right detent to be sure that the spiral cable is set in the neutral position.
  12.  
  13. If the air bag warning lamp blinks or stay ON (at the user mode) it shows that the spiral cable may be snapped due to improper positioning.
    NOTE
    If that-s the case perform the self diagnosis test again and replace the spiral cable as required.

  15. Adjust the steering angle sensor neutral position.
  16.

NOTE

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Position the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  6.  
  7. On 1998-2001 vehicles remove the lower lid from the steering wheel. Disconnect the air bag module connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the side lids. Using the proper Torx head tool, remove the left and right special bolts.
  10.  
  11. Lift up the air bag module. Remove the air bag module.
    NOTE
    When removing the air bag module connector, insert a thin bladed tool wrapped in tape into the notch, lift the lock connector and remove the connector.

  12.  
  13. Disconnect the air bag harness connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ASCD and audio steering switch from the air bag module.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering wheel retaining bolt. Disconnect the horn connector.
  18.  
  19. Using the proper removal tool, remove the steering wheel.
  20.  
  21. Remove the spiral cable retaining screws, and while pushing the upper plastic tab, remove the spiral cable.
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the spiral cable. Do not apply lubricant to the spiral cable.

  23. Remove the steering angle sensor from the spiral cable.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the horn switch connector and then the spiral cable connectors.
    NOTE
    Do not tap or bump the steering wheel.

  27. Remove the wiper switch and lighting switch from the spiral cable.
    NOTE
    With the steering linkage disconnected, the spiral cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns. The spiral cable can be turned counterclockwise about 2.5 turns from the right end position.

To install:

  1. Be sure the front wheels are in the straight position.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to align the spiral cable correctly when installing the steering wheel. Make sure that the spiral cable is in the neutral position.
    NOTE
    The neutral position is detected by turning to the left 2.5 revolutions from the right end position and ending with the knob at the top. The spiral cable may snap due to steering operation if the cable is installed incorrectly. Also, with the steering linkage disconnected the cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns (2.5 from the neutral position to both the left and right).

  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Be sure to use new retaining screws when installing the air bag module. Torque the special bolts to 11-18 inch lbs.
    NOTE
    When installing the air bag module connector, insert a thin bladed tool wrapped in tape into the notch, lift the lock connector and remove the connector. Install the connector with the lock raised and push the lock into the connector.

  8.  
  9. Perform the self diagnosis using the CONSULT-II tool or equivalent to ensure that the entire SRS system is operating properly.
  10.  
  11. Turn the steering wheel completely to the left detent and than to the right detent to be sure that the spiral cable is set in the neutral position.
  12.  
  13. If the air bag warning lamp blinks or stay ON (at the user mode) it shows that the spiral cable may be snapped due to improper positioning.
    NOTE
    If that-s the case perform the self diagnosis test again and replace the spiral cable as required.
