Automatic Transaxle

NOTE
Procedures apply to front and rear halfshafts.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Plug seal from the slide joint by gently tapping around the joint with a hammer
     
    Boot bands
     

  4.  
  5. Put matchmarks on the slide joint housing and halfshaft prior to separating the joint assembly.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the spider assembly and driveshaft.
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the spider assembly.


    NOTE
    Cover the halfshaft serrations with tape, so as not to damage the boot.

To assemble:

  1. Thoroughly clean all parts in solvent and dry with compressed air. Check parts for evidence of damage and replace as necessary.
    1. Install the boot and new boot band on the halfshaft.
    2.  
    3. Install the spider assembly making sure the matchmarks made during removal are properly aligned.
      NOTE
      The spider is press fit with the serration chamfer facing the shaft.

    4.  
    5. Install a new snapring.
    6.

  3. Pack the joint with 4.37-4.73 ounces (124-134g) of grease.
    1. Install the slide joint housing and the snapring.
    2.  
    3. Ensure that the boot is properly installed on the halfshaft groove
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Set the boot so that it does not swell or deform when its length is 3.70 in. (94mm).
  6.  
  7. Lock the new boot bands securely.
  8.

To assemble:

  1. Thoroughly clean all parts in solvent and dry with compressed air. Check parts for evidence of damage and replace as necessary
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    The spider is a press fit with the serration chamfer facing the shaft.


    NOTE
    Hold the plug seal horizontally when pressing it into place. This will prevent the spring inside from falling down or tilting.



    Boot and small boot band on the halfshaft
     
    Joint housing onto halfshaft
     
    Spider assembly, making sure the matchmarks are properly aligned
     



    Snapring
     
    Coil spring, spring cap and new plug seal to the slide joint housing. Apply a suitable sealant to the plug seal prior to installation
     

  4.  
  5. Move the shaft in an axial direction to make sure that the spring is installed properly. If there is a drag or the spring is installed improperly, replace the plug seal with a new one.
  6.  
  7. Pack the halfshaft with 5.82-6.17 ounces (165-175g) of grease.
  8.  
  9. Ensure that the boot is properly installed on the halfshaft groove
  10.  
  11. Set the boot so that it does not swell or deform when its length is 3.66-3.74 in. (93-95mm).
  12.  
  13. Lock the new boot bands securely.
  14.

  3. Disassemble the joint as follows:
    1. Remove the boot bands.
    2.  
    3. Matchmark the slide joint housing and inner race before separating the assembly.
    4.  
    5. Using a suitable prytool, remove the stopper ring and pull out the slide joint.
    6.  
    7. Matchmark the inner race and drive shaft.
    8.  
    9. Remove the snapring.
    10.  
    11. Remove the ball cage, inner race and balls as a unit.
    12.  
    13. Remove the boot.
    14.  

  4.  


NOTE
Cover the halfshaft serration-s with tape, so as not to damage the boot.

To install:

  1. Assemble the joint as follows:
    1. Thoroughly clean all parts in solvent and dry with compressed air. Check parts for evidence of damage, and replace as necessary.

    3. Install the boot and new boot band on the halfshaft.

  3. Install a new inner snapring.
  4.  
  5. Install the ball cage, inner race and balls as a unit. Confirm that the matchmarks are aligned.
  6.  
  7. Install a new outer snapring.
  8.  
  9. Pack the CV joint with 5.8-6.17 ounces of grease.
  10.  
  11. Ensure that the boot is properly installed on the halfshaft groove.
  12.  
  13. Set the boot so that it does not swell or deform when its length is 3.82-3.90 in. (97-99mm).
  14.  
  15. Lock the new boot bands securely.
  16.

    7. Matchmark the inner race and driveshaft.
    8.  
    9. Remove the snap-ring.
    10.  
    11. Remove the ball cage, inner race and balls as a unit.
    12.  
    13. Remove the boot.
      NOTE
      Cover the halfshaft serration-s with tape, so as not to damage the boot.

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean all parts in solvent and dry with compressed air. Check parts for evidence of damage and replace as necessary.

  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    The spider is press fit with the serration chamfer facing the shaft.


    NOTE
    Hold the plug seal horizontally when pressing it into place. This will prevent the spring inside from falling down or tilting.

    Snap-ring
     
    Coil spring, spring cap and new plug seal to the slide joint housing. Apply a suitable sealant to the plug seal prior to installation

  5. Move the shaft in an axial direction to make sure that the spring is installed properly. If there is a drag or the spring is installed improperly, replace the plug seal with a new one.
  6.  
  7. Pack the halfshaft with 5.82-6.17 ounces (165-175g) of grease.

  9. Ensure that the boot is properly installed on the halfshaft groove.
  10.  
  11. Set the boot so that it does not swell or deform when its length is 3.66-3.74 in. (93-95mm).
  12.  
  13. Lock the new boot bands securely.
  14.  

TS83 Type

  3. Disassemble the joint as follows:
    1. Remove the boot bands.
