NOTE
Clear Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) if applicable.

  1. Inspect the sensor connector connection, check terminal for poor connections, loose wires, bent, broken or corroded pins, and then verify that the connector is always securely fastened.
  2.  
  3. Remove the sensor from the engine.
  4.  
  5. With the sensing portion of the sensor immersed in hot water, check the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 using an ohmmeter at the following temperatures.
  6.  
  7. Engine coolant temperature 68 degrees, resistance 2.1-2.9 kohm.
  8.  
  9. Engine coolant temperature 122 degrees, resistance 0.68-1.00 kohm.
  10.  
  11. Engine coolant temperature 194 degrees, resistance 0.236-0.260 kohm.
  12.  
  13. If not within specification, replace the sensor.
  14.  

The resistance of the engine coolant temperature sensor should be:



If the engine coolant temperature is 68°F, resistance should be 2.1-2.9 kohms.
 
If the engine coolant temperature is 122°F, resistance should be 0.68-1.00 kohms.
 
If the engine coolant temperature is 194°F, resistance should be 0.236-0.260 kohms.
