Installation



2.0L Engine
Engine Disturbed
  1. If the engine was disturbed (cranked or turned over with the distributor removed), install or connect the following:

    New distributor housing O-ring
     

  2.  
  3. Position the engine so the No. 1 piston is at TDC of its compression stroke and the mark on the vibration damper is aligned with 0 on the timing indicator.
    NOTE
    There are distributor cap runners inside the cap on 2.0L engine. Be sure the rotor is pointing to where the No. 1 runner originates inside the cap.



    Distributor in the engine so the rotor is aligned with the position of the No. 1 ignition wire on the distributor cap. Be sure the distributor is fully seated and that the distributor shaft is fully engaged.
     



    Snug the hold-down bolt
     
    Distributor pick-up lead wires
     
    Distributor cap and tighten the screws
     
    Splash shield, if equipped
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Check and/or adjust the ignition timing and tighten the hold-down bolt to 10-12 ft. lbs. (14-16 Nm).
  6.  

Engine Not Disturbed
  1. If the engine was not disturbed, install or connect the following:

    New distributor housing O-ring
     
    Distributor in the engine so the rotor is aligned with the matchmark on the housing and the housing is aligned with the matchmark on the engine. Be sure the distributor is fully seated and the distributor gear is fully engaged.
     
    Snug the hold-down bolt
     
    Distributor pick-up lead wires
     
    Distributor cap and tighten the screws
     
    Splash shield
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Check and/or adjust the ignition timing and tighten the hold-down bolt.
  4.  

Removal



2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Splash shield, if equipped
     
    Distributor connections but leave the ignition wires in place
     
    Distributor cap hold-down screws and lift off the distributor cap with all ignition wires still connected
     

  4.  
  5. Matchmark the rotor to the distributor housing, and the distributor housing to the engine.
    NOTE
    Do not crank the engine during this procedure. If the engine is cranked, the matchmark must be disregarded.

3.0L And 4.1L Engines

These engines are equipped with a distributorless ignition.

Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Splash shield, if equipped
     
    Distributor connections but leave the ignition wires in place
     
    Distributor cap hold-down screws and lift off the distributor cap with all ignition wires still connected
     

  4.  
  5. Matchmark the rotor to the distributor housing, and the distributor housing to the engine.
  6.  


NOTE
Do not crank the engine during this procedure. If the engine is cranked, the matchmark must be disregarded.

  1. Check and/or adjust the ignition timing and tighten the hold-down bolt to 10-12 ft. lbs. (14-16 Nm).
