Electric Fan Switch

Testing

On vehicles so equipped, the engine cooling fan is operated by a relay that is controlled through the Engine Control Module (ECM). The cooling fan relay will activate depending upon the needs of one or more systems including the cooling system, the air conditioning and the heating systems.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Drain the radiator. Properly dispose the coolant.
    NOTE
Be sure the engine is cold before draining the radiator. Do not allow coolant to spill on the drive belts.

  6.
  7. Remove the air duct (inlet) and air cleaner case.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the upper radiator hose at the radiator.
  10.
  11. Disconnect the fan motor harness connectors at the right lower portion of the fan shroud.
  12.
  13. Remove the radiator cooling fan assembly.
    NOTE
Be careful not to damage or scratch the radiator core.

  14.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.
  3. Be sure to fill the radiator with the proper grade and type engine coolant.
  4.
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks. Correct as required.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the engine undercover.
  6.
  7. Drain the radiator. Properly dispose the coolant.
    NOTE
Be sure the engine is cold before draining the radiator. Do not allow coolant to spill on the drive belts.

  8.
  9. Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses.
  10.
  11. Remove the engine coolant temperature sensor harness, engine coolant temperature reservoir tank hoes, transmission cooler hose and the mounting bolts for the cooling fan fluid hose bracket from the fan shroud.
  12.
  13. Drain the cooling fan fluid.
    NOTE
This is done because there is no drain plug on the reservoir tank or piping. Drain the fluid from tank oil inlet and pipe separating points.

  14.
  15. Remove the coolant reservoir tank.
  16.
  17. Disconnect the hoses between the cooling fan motor and the cooling fan pump (joined with the water pump) and the hose between the cooling fan motor and the cooling fan cooler.
    NOTE
Coolant will leak, so have a catch pan ready.

  18.
  19. Remove the cooling fan shroud retaining bolts.
  20.
  21. Remove the radiator mounting bracket. With the radiator moved toward the front of the vehicle, lift up and remove the cooling fan.
    NOTE
When removing the cooling fan pump, remove it together with the water pump. They cannot be separated.

  22.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.
  3. Be sure to fill the radiator with the proper grade and type engine coolant.
  4.
