Removal & Installation



4.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine
     
    Timing chain assemblies
     
    Camshaft sprockets while holding camshaft locked in place
     
    Camshaft bracket bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence to prevent damage to the camshaft. Keep the brackets in order so they can be installed in the correct locations.
     
    Camshafts, shims and lifters. Keep all parts in order so they can be installed in their original positions.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Valve lifters and shims
     

  2.  
  3. Identify the correct camshaft for proper placement as shown in the illustration.
  4.  
  5. With no 1 cylinder at TDC, install the camshafts so the dowel pins are in the correct locations.
  6.  
  7. Install the camshaft brackets so the installation location can be correctly read when viewed from the side of the left exhaust bank.
  8.  
  9. Apply liquid gasket to camshaft brackets No. 1 and left side no. 6 in the locations shown.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the camshaft brackets in the sequence shown using the following steps:
    1. Tighten numbers 9 to 12 to 17 inch lbs. (1.96 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten numbers 1 to 8 to 17 inch lbs. (1.96 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Tighten numbers 13 and 14 to 17 inch lbs. (1.96 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Tighten all bolts in sequence to 52 inch lbs. (5.88 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Tighten numbers 1 to 12 to 92 inch lbs. (10.41 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Tighten numbers 13 and 14 to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).

  13. Install the camshaft sprockets and while holding the camshaft in place tighten the bolts to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Adjust the valve clearances.
  16.  
  17. Install or connect the following:

    Timing chain assemblies
     
    Engine
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  18.  
  19. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  20.  
  21. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

    Camshaft sprockets while holding camshaft locked in place

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Valve lifters and shims

  9. Apply liquid gasket to camshaft brackets No. 1 and left side no. 6 in the locations shown.

  11. Tighten the camshaft brackets in the sequence shown using the following steps:
    1. Tighten numbers 9 to 12 to 17 inch lbs. (1.96 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten numbers 1 to 8 to 17 inch lbs. (1.96 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Tighten numbers 13 and 14 to 17 inch lbs. (1.96 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Tighten all bolts in sequence to 52 inch lbs. (5.88 Nm).

    9. Tighten numbers 1 to 12 to 92 inch lbs. (10.41 Nm).
