Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Steel oil pan bolts in the proper sequence
     
    Steel oil pan. Insert tool KV10111100 between steel oil pan and aluminum oil pan to break the seal.
     
    Front exhaust tube and support the transaxle with a suitable jack and raise the engine with an engine hoist
     
    Center crossmember
     
    Transaxle shift control cable, if equipped with an automatic transaxle
     
    A/C compressor bracket gussets and the rear cover plate
     
    Aluminum oil pan bolts in sequence
     
    Baffle plate
     
    2 engine-to-transaxle bolts and install them into vacant bolt holes on the oil pan. Tighten the bolts to release the oil pan from the cylinder block. Use tool KV10111100 to break the remaining seal.
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Remove the 2 bolts previously installed in the oil pan.
  2.  
  3. Clean the oil pan rail of all liquid gasket and apply a new bead of18
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Aluminum oil pan.
     

  6.  
  7. Torque the bolts in the proper sequence as follows:
    1. Bolts 1 through 16 to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Bolts 17 and 18 to 56-66 inch lbs. (6.5-7.5 Nm).

    2 engine-to-transaxle bolts, rear cover plate, compressor bracket gussets, automatic transmission shift control cable (if equipped), center member, front exhaust tube and baffle plate
     

  8.  
  9. Clean the oil pan rail of all liquid gasket and apply a new bead of18

    Steel oil pan. Torque the bolts in numbered sequence to 56-66 inch lbs. (6-8 Nm). Wait 30 minutes before refilling engine case with oil.
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with clean oil.

    Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Steel oil pan bolts in the proper sequence
     
    Steel oil pan. Insert tool KV10111100 between steel oil pan and aluminum oil pan to break the seal.
     
    Front exhaust tube and support the transaxle with a suitable jack and raise the engine with an engine hoist
     
    Center crossmember
     
    Transaxle shift control cable, if equipped with an automatic transaxle
     
    A/C compressor bracket gussets and the rear cover plate
     
    Aluminum oil pan bolts in sequence
     
    Baffle plate
     
    2 engine-to-transaxle bolts and install them into vacant bolt holes on the oil pan. Tighten the bolts to release the oil pan from the cylinder block. Use tool KV10111100 to break the remaining seal
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Remove the 2 bolts previously installed in the oil pan.
  2.  
  3. Clean the oil pan rail of all liquid gasket and apply a new bead of 1 / 8 inch thickness to the oil pan rail.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Aluminum oil pan. Torque the bolts in the proper sequence as follows:
     

    1. Bolts 1 through 16 to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Bolts 17 and 18 to 56-66 inch lbs. (6.5-7.5 Nm).

  7. Clean the oil pan rail of all liquid gasket and apply a new bead of 1 / 8 inch thickness to the oil pan rail.

  9. Fill the engine with clean oil.

    Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
     

  10.

  7. Clean the oil pan rail of all liquid gasket and apply a new bead of 1 / 8 inch thickness to the oil pan rail.

  9. Fill the engine with clean oil.

    Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

3.0L & 3.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover(s)
     
    Steel (lower) oil pan bolts in the reverse sequence of the torque sequence
     

  6.  
  7. Insert a seal cutter between the steel and aluminum oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Be careful not to damage the aluminum mating surface of the upper oil pan.

  10.  
  11. Hang the engine at the right and left side engine slingers with a suitable hoist.
  12.  
  13. Position a suitable jack under the transaxle.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensors (REFERENCE and POSITION) from the oil pan
     
    Front and rear engine mounting nuts and bolts
     
    Center crossmember assembly
     
    Engine drive belts
     
    A/C compressor and bracket

  17. Insert a seal cutter between the aluminum oil pan and the engine block.
  18.  
  19. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces of the oil pan or engine block.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Baffle plate to the oil pan. Torque the bolts to 22-27 inch lbs. (2-3 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Apply sealant to the front and rear seal of the oil pan.

    New O-rings to the cylinder block and the oil pump body
     

  4.  
  5. Apply a 0.177-0.217 in. (4.5-5.5mm) continuous bead of liquid gasket to the upper oil pan mating surface and install the oil pan. Torque the bolts in sequence to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).

    Oil pan strainer. Torque the bolts to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).
     
    Rear cover plate and the lower transaxle bolts
     
    A/C compressor and bracket
     
    Engine drive belts and adjust as necessary
     
    Center crossmember assembly
     
    Front and rear engine mounting nuts and bolts and remove the support jack and the engine hoist
     
    CKP sensors (REFERENCE and POSITION) to the oil pan. Torque the bolts to 75-96 inch lbs. (9-10 Nm).
     
    Front exhaust pipe and its support
     
    Oil strainer

  7. Apply a 0.177-0.217 in. (4.5-5.5mm) continuous bead of liquid gasket to the lower oil pan mating surface and install the oil pan. Tighten the mounting bolts in sequence to 57-66 inch lbs. (6-8 Nm)
  8.  


NOTE
Wait at least 30 minutes before refilling the engine oil.



Engine undercover(s)
 
Negative battery cable
 

  1. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  2.  
  3. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil and coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hood.
  6.  
  7. Install a suitable engine slinger to secure the engine for crossmember removal.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front suspension crossmember
     
    Drive belts
     
    Alternator and starter
     
    Idler pulley and bracket
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
     
    Oil filter and oil cooler, as necessary
     
    Lower oil pan bolts in the reverse sequence of the torque sequence
     

  10.  
  11. Insert a seal cutter between the upper and lower oil pan. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Be careful not to damage the aluminum mating surface of the upper oil pan.

  12.  
  13. Insert a seal cutter between the steel and aluminum oil pan. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces.

  14.  
  15. Clean all gasket mating surfaces.
  16.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil strainer to the oil pump
     
    New O-rings to the cylinder block and oil pump side
     
    Oil pan gasket, applying RTV sealant as shown. Align the protrusion of the oil pan gasket with the notches of the front timing chain case and rear oil seal retainer.
     

  2.  
  3. Apply sealant as shown in the illustration. Install the upper oil pan and tighten the bolts, in sequence, to 12-13 ft. lbs. (15.7-18.6 Nm).

  5. For the lower oil pan, apply sealant as shown in the illustrations, then install and tighten the bolts, in sequence to 74-82 inch lbs. (8.3-9.3 Nm).

  7. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

NOTE
Wait at least 30 minutes before refilling the engine oil.

  1. Connect the negative battery cable
  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with clean oil and coolant.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Drain the engine oil.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

    Steel (lower) oil pan bolts in the reverse sequence of the torque sequence

  7. Insert a seal cutter between the steel and aluminum oil pan.

  15. Insert a seal cutter between the aluminum oil pan and the engine block.
  16.  
  17. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces of the oil pan or engine block.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Baffle plate to the oil pan. Torque the bolts to 22-27 inch lbs. (2-3 Nm)

  3. Apply sealant to the front and rear seal of the oil pan.

    New O-rings to the cylinder block and the oil pump body
     

  4.  
  5. Apply a 0.177-0.217 in. (4.5-5.5mm) continuous bead of liquid gasket to the upper oil pan mating surface and install the oil pan. Torque the bolts in sequence to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).
