2.0L Engine

  1. Remove the oil pump from the engine.
  2.  
  3. Using a feeler gauge, straightedge and micrometers along with the accompanying illustration check the body to outer gear clearance (1) specification should be 0.0045-0.0079 inch, the inner gear to outer gear tip clearance (2) specification should be below 0.0071 inch, the body to inner gear clearance (3) specification should be 0.0020-0.0035 inch, the body to outer gear axial clearance (4) specification should be 0.0020-0.0043 inch and the inner gear to brazed portion of the housing clearance (5) specification should be 0.0018-0.0036 inch.
    NOTE
    If the tip clearance (2) exceeds the limit, replace the gear set. If the body clearances (1, 3, 4, and 5) exceed the limit replace the front cover assembly.

  5. Visually inspect the regulator valve. Check the valve sliding surface and valve spring. Coat the valve with clean engine oil. Check that if falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight.
    NOTE
    If damaged, replace the regulator valve set or the oil pump assembly.

  7. Check the regulator valve to oil pump cover clearance. Specification should be 0.0026-0.0038 inch. If not within specification, replace the oil pump cover.

  1. Remove the oil pump from the engine.

  3.   7. Check the regulator valve to oil pump cover clearance (6). Specification should be 0.0016-0.0038 inch. If not within specification, replace the oil pump body.

  1. Remove the oil pump from the engine.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pump cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the inner and outer rotors from the pump body.
  6.  
  7. Remove the regulator valve plug, spring and valve.
  8.  
  9. Measure the oil pump clearance using a feeler gauge. Body to outer rotor (position 1) should be 0.0045-0.0102 inch. Inner rotor to outer rotor (position 2) should be 0.0071 inch.

  11. Measure the clearance using a feeler gauge. Side clearance between the inner rotor and the pump body (position 3) should be 0.0012-0.0028 inch. Side clearance between the outer rotor and the pump body (position 4) should be 0.0020-0.0043 inch.

  13. Calculate the clearance between the inner rotor and the oil pump body as follows.

  15. Measure the inner diameter of the oil pump body with an inside micrometer (position 5). Measure the outer diameter of the oil pump inner rotor with a micrometer (position 6).
  16.  
  17. Calculate the oil pump inner rotor to oil pump body clearance using the following formula. Clearance=Inner diameter of oil pump body-Outer diameter of inner rotor. Inner rotor to brazed portion of housing clearance specification is 0.0018-0.0036 inch. If not within specification, replace the oil pump.
  18.  
  19. Check the regulator valve to oil pump cover clearance using the following formula. Clearance=(valve hole diameter)- (outer diameter of valve). Regulator valve to oil pump specification should be 0.0016-0.0038 inch.
    NOTE
    Coat the valve with clean engine oil. Check that it falls smoothly into the regulator valve hole by its own weight.

  21. Assemble the oil pump in the reverse order.
  22.  
  23. Install the inner and outer rotor with the punched marks on the oil pump cover side.

4.1L Engine
  1. Remove the oil pump from the engine.
  2.  
  3. Using a feeler gauge, straightedge and micrometers along with the accompanying illustration check the driveshaft to driven shaft clearance (C) specification should be 0.0009-0.0027 inch, the driven gear to driven shaft clearance (F) specification should be below 0.0010-0.0025 inch, the drive and driven gear to housing axial clearance (G) specification should be 0.0031-0.0051 inch, and the drive and driven gear to housing radial clearance (H) specification should be 0.0049-0.0096.

  7. Check the regulator valve to oil pump cover clearance. Specification -L- should be 0.0016-0.0038 inch. If not within specification, replace the oil pump cover.

  1. Remove the oil pump from the engine.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pump cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the inner and outer rotors from the oil pump body.
  6.  
  7. Remove the regulator plug, regulator spring and regulator valve.
  8.  
  9. Measure the radial clearance using a feeler gauge. Body to outer rotor (position 1) should be 0.0045-0.0079 inch. Inner rotor to outer tip (position 2) should be 0.0071 inch.
  10.  
  11. Measure the side clearance using a feeler gauge. Body to inner rotor (position 3) should be 0.0012-0.0028 inch. Body to outer rotor (position 4) should be 0.0012-0.0035 inch.
  12.  
  13. Calculate the clearance between the inner rotor and the oil pump body as follows.
  14.  
  15. Measure the outer diameter of the protruded portion of the inner rotor (position 5) using a feeler gauge. Measure the inner diameter of the oil pump body to the brazed portion (position 6) using a feeler gauge. Calculate the clearance using the following formula. Clearance=Inner diameter of oil pump body-Outer diameter of inner rotor. Inner rotor to brazed portion of housing clearance specification is 0.0018-0.0036 inch.
  16.  
  17. Check the regulator valve to oil pump cover clearance using the following formula. Clearance=D1 (valve hole diameter)- D2 (outer diameter of valve). Regulator valve to oil pump specification should be 0.0016-0.0038 inch.
    NOTE
    Coat the valve with clean engine oil. Check that it falls smoothly into the regulator valve hole by its own weight.

  18.  
  19. Assemble the oil pump in the reverse order.
  20.  
  21. Install the inner and outer rotor with the punched marks on the oil pump cover side.

Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Drive belts
     
    Cylinder head with the intake and exhaust manifolds attached
     
    Oil pans
     
    Oil strainer and baffle plate
     
    Crankshaft pulley and the front cover assembly
     
    Oil pump from the inside of the front cover
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Coat the oil pump gears with oil and fit the pump to the cover, using a new oil seal and O-ring.
  2.  
  3. Clean the mating surfaces of liquid gasket and apply a fresh bead of18
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Front cover assembly
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Oil strainer, baffle plate, oil pans, cylinder head and drive belts
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Drive belts
     
    Cylinder head with the intake and exhaust manifolds attached
     
    Oil pans
     
    Oil strainer and baffle plate
     
    Crankshaft pulley and the front cover assembly
     
    Oil pump from the inside of the front cover
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Coat the oil pump gears with oil and fit the pump to the cover, using a new oil seal and O-ring.
  2.  
  3. Clean the mating surfaces of liquid gasket and apply a fresh bead of 1 / 8 inch (3mm) sealer to the sealing surface of the front cover.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Front cover assembly
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Oil strainer, baffle plate, oil pans, cylinder head and drive belts
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Front cover assembly

  7. Fill the engine with clean oil.

  9. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

3.0L And 3.5L Engines

NOTE
The oil pump bolts to the front of the engine block and is driven by the crankshaft. Removal of the timing cover and chains are necessary for oil pump service.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Rotate the engine and position it to Top Dead Center (TDC) compression stroke of cylinder No. 1.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Drive belts
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor (PHASE) and the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor (REF/POS)
     
    Right front wheel and inner fender cover
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Front exhaust pipe and its support and support the engine at the left and right side slingers with a suitable hoist
     
    Engine right side mounting insulator and bracket nuts and bolts
     
    Center crossmember assembly
     
    A/C compressor and mounting bracket
     
    Lower and upper oil pans
     
    Oil strainer from the oil pump
     
    Water pump cover and the front cover assembly
     
    Lower timing chain assembly
     
    Oil pump

To install:


NOTE
When installing the oil pump, be sure to apply engine oil to the gears.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump. Torque the bolts to 57-66 inch lbs. (6.4-7.5 Nm) and the mounting screws to 53-69 inch lbs. (5.9-7.8 Nm).
     
    Lower timing chain assembly
     
    Front timing cover and water pump covers
     
    Oil strainer using a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).
     
    Upper and lower oil pans. Be sure to use new O-rings at the oil pump to upper oil pan mating surface.
     
    A/C compressor and mounting bracket
     
    Center crossmember assembly
     
    Engine right side mounting insulator and bracket and remove the engine support hoist
     
    Front exhaust pipe and its support
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Engine undercovers and the right side inner fender cover
     
    Right front wheel
     
    CMP sensor (PHASE) and the CKP sensor (REF/POS)
     
    Engine drive belts and adjust as necessary
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine, check the oil pressure, and check for oil leaks.
  6.  

3.0L Engine

NOTE
The oil pump bolts to the front of the engine block and is driven by the crankshaft. Removal of the timing cover and chains are necessary for oil pump service.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

    Front exhaust pipe and its support and support the engine at the left and right side slingers with a suitable hoist
     
    Engine right side mounting insulator and bracket nuts and bolts
     
    Center crossmember assembly
     
    A/C compressor and mounting bracket
     
    Lower and upper oil pans
     
    Oil strainer from the oil pump
     
    Water pump cover and the front cover assembly
     
    Lower timing chain assembly
     
    Oil pump
     

  8.  

To install:


NOTE
When installing the oil pump, be sure to apply engine oil to the gears.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump. Torque the bolts to 57 inch lbs. (6.5 Nm) and the mounting screws to 33-44 inch lbs. (4-5 Nm)
     
    Lower timing chain assembly
     
    Front timing cover and water pump covers
     
    Oil strainer using a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm)
     
    Upper and lower oil pans. Be sure to use new O-rings at the oil pump to upper oil pan mating surface
     
    A/C compressor and mounting bracket
     
    Center crossmember assembly
     
    Engine right side mounting insulator and bracket and remove the engine support hoist
     
    Front exhaust pipe and its support
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Engine undercovers and the right side inner fender cover
     
    Right front wheel
     
    CMP sensor (PHASE) and the CKP sensor (REF/POS)
     
    Engine drive belts and adjust as necessary

  3. Fill the engine with clean oil.

  5. Start the engine, check the oil pressure, and check for oil leaks.

The oil pump is mounted in the cylinder block below the left bank and behind the left timing chain.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing chains
     
    Oil pump assembly from the front of the engine
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil pump mounting surface.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump using a new gasket. Torque the short bolt to 56-66 ft. lbs. (6-8 Nm) and the long bolt to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).
     
    Timing chains
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  8.  


NOTE
The oil pump is mounted in the cylinder block below the left bank and behind the left timing chain.

4.5L Engine

NOTE
The oil pump is mounted in the cylinder block below the left bank and behind the left timing chain.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing chains
     
    Oil pump assembly from the front of the engine
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil pump mounting surface.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump using a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
     
    Timing chains
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  8.  


NOTE
The oil pump is mounted in the cylinder block below the left bank and behind the left timing chain; engine removal is required before servicing. Refer to Engine Assembly Removal and Installation.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine assembly
     
    Front cover and timing chains
     
    Oil pump assembly from the front of the engine
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil pump mounting surface.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump using a new gasket
     
    Timing chains and front cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the engine with clean oil
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
