Removal & Installation



4.1L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine from the vehicle
     
    Alternator
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Exhaust manifold and place the engine on a suitable stand
     
    Intake manifold collector
     
    Injector harness and the fuel tube assembly with the injector
     

  6.  


NOTE
Do not disassemble the fuel hose.



Intake manifold
 
Valve cover
 

  1. Set the No. 1 piston to Top Dead Center (TDC) on its compression stroke. Align the timing mark (orange paint) on the crankshaft pulley with the timing indicator on the front cover.
  2.  
  3. Make sure the intake camshaft lobe for the No. 1 cylinder faces the intake port and the exhaust lobe faces the exhaust port.
  4.  


NOTE
It is possible to check the camshaft positions by checking the notch positions on the camshaft when the No. 1 piston is at TDC of the compression stroke. At this position the cylinder head bolts can be removed.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
     
    Upper front cover bolts and nuts in the sequence illustrated
     
    Front cover
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the upper chain tensioner by pressing the tensioner in and inserting a 0.04 inch (1mm) diameter pin in the pin hole. Once secured remove the bolts and the tensioner
  4.  
  5. Matchmark the upper timing chain and camshaft sprockets to aid reassembly.

  6.  
  7. Remove the left and right tensioner covers from the front covers by pressing the tensioner in and inserting a 0.04 inch (1mm) diameter pin in the pin hole.

  8.  
  9. Matchmark the lower timing chain and idler sprocket to aid reassembly.

  10.  
  11. Compress the lower chain tensioners and install a pin through the hole to secure it, then remove the tensioner.

    Slack and chain guides. Be sure to note the locations of the bolts so they can be installed in their original positions.

To install:

  1. Be sure the crankshaft key is pointing toward the center of the left bank. This should be a 45° angle from the center.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Lower right bank timing chain by aligning the mark on the chain with the mark on the sprocket and installing the sprocket with chain on the crankshaft. Be sure the thick side of the sprocket faces the cylinder block to provide clearance between the block and chain.
     
    Slack and chain guides. Be sure to install the bolts in the correct locations. Torque the bolts to 10-14 ft. lbs. (13-19 Nm).
     
    Lower chain for the left bank in the same manner as the right one
     
    Left slack and chain guide. Torque the bolts to 10-14 ft. lbs. (13-19 Nm).
     
    Oil pump drive chain and sprockets. Torque the bolt on the driven gear to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).

  5. Install the upper guide by installing the bolts loosely, then inserting a 0.04 in. (1mm) feeler gauge between the guide and chain. Press on the guide lightly with the same force as the weight of the guide and torque the bolts to 56-74 inch lbs. (6-8 Nm).

    Chain tensioner with the pins installed using new gaskets. Torque the bolts to 82-95 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).

  7. Confirm that the timing marks on the crankshaft sprockets and chains are still aligned.

    Front cover. Be sure to install the bolts in the correct locations.
     

  8.  
  9. Apply engine oil to the idler shaft and install it on the idler sprocket.
  10.  
  11. Align the mark on the chain with the mark on the idler sprocket and install the sprocket.

    Place the upper chains on the idler sprockets. It is not necessary to align the mating marks at this time. The marks can be aligned after the cylinder head is installed.

  13. Install the cylinder heads
  14.  
  15. Align the marks on the upper chains with the marks on the sprockets, then install the sprockets on the camshafts while keeping the marks aligned.

    Idler shaft bolts. Torque the bolts to 32-43 ft. lbs. (43-58 Nm).
     

  16.  
  17. Remove the lower chain tensioner pins.

  19. Align the upper timing chain mating marks with the marks on the sprockets and install the sprockets. Torque the intake sprocket bolt to 76-83 ft. lbs. (103-113 Nm) and the exhaust sprocket bolt to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm)
  20.  
  21. Compress the upper chain tensioners and install a pin through it to secure it in position.

    Tensioners. Torque the bolts to 82-95 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).
     

  22.  
  23. Lubricate the timing chains and related parts with clean engine oil and install the upper covers. Torque the cover bolts in sequence.
  24.  
  25. Installation of the remaining components is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  26.  
  27. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  28.  
  29. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  30.  
  31. Start the engine and check for proper operation.

  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine from the vehicle
     
    Alternator

  13. Remove the upper chain tensioner by pressing the tensioner in and inserting a 0.04 inch (1mm) diameter pin in the pin hole. Once secured remove the bolts and the tensioner

  15. Matchmark the upper timing chain and camshaft sprockets to aid reassembly.

  17. Remove the left and right tensioner covers from the front covers by pressing the tensioner in and inserting a 0.04 inch (1mm) diameter pin in the pin hole.

  18.  
  19. Matchmark the lower timing chain and idler sprocket to aid reassembly.

  21. Compress the lower chain tensioners and install a pin through the hole to secure it, then remove the tensioner.

    Slack and chain guides. Be sure to note the locations of the bolts so they can be installed in their original positions

To install:

    Lower right bank timing chain by aligning the mark on the chain with the mark on the sprocket and installing the sprocket with chain on the crankshaft. Be sure the thick side of the sprocket faces the cylinder block to provide clearance between the block and chain
     
    Slack and chain guides. Be sure to install the bolts in the correct locations. Torque the bolts to 10-14 ft. lbs. (13-19 Nm)
     
    Lower chain for the left bank in the same manner as the right one
     
    Left slack and chain guide. Torque the bolts to 10-14 ft. lbs. (13-19 Nm)
     
    Oil pump drive chain and sprockets. Torque the bolt on the driven gear to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm)

  9. Apply engine oil to the idler shaft and install it on the idler sprocket.
  10.  
  11. Align the mark on the chain with the mark on the idler sprocket and install the sprocket.

    Place the upper chains on the idler sprockets. It is not necessary to align the mating marks at this time. The marks can be aligned after the cylinder head is installed

  13. Install the cylinder heads
  14.  
  15. Align the marks on the upper chains with the marks on the sprockets, then install the sprockets on the camshafts while keeping the marks aligned.

    Idler shaft bolts. Torque the bolts to 32-43 ft. lbs. (43-58 Nm)
     

  16.  
  17. Remove the lower chain tensioner pins.

  19. Align the upper timing chain mating marks with the marks on the sprockets and install the sprockets. Torque the intake sprocket bolt to 76-83 ft. lbs. (103-113 Nm) and the exhaust sprocket bolt to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm)
  20.  
  21. Compress the upper chain tensioners and install a pin through it to secure it in position.

    Tensioners. Torque the bolts to 82-95 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm)

  23. Lubricate the timing chains and related parts with clean engine oil and install the upper covers. Torque the cover bolts in sequence.

4.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine from the vehicle
     
    Drive belt tensioner and idler pulley
     
    Thermostat housing
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Intake valve timing control sensor from both sides
     
    Camshaft Position sensor (CMP)
     
    Intake valve timing control solenoid from both sides
     
    Intake valve timing control covers by loosening bolts in the reverse of the tightening sequence
     
    Front cover o-rings
     

  6.  
  7. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise until No. 1 cylinder is on the compression stroke. The TDC mark on the pulley without the paint mark should align with the timing pointer.
  8.  
  9. Verify the correct TDC position by ensuring that the lobes of the No. 1 cylinder camshafts are pointing outward. If not rotate the crankshaft 360° until the lobes are correct.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan rear plate cover and install a locking tool into the drive gear.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pan and strainer
  16.  
  17. Loosen and remove the front cover bolts in the reverse of the tightening sequence.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front cover and pry out the front cover oil seal.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 3 O-rings from the cylinder heads and block.
  22.  
  23. Remove the chain tensioner cover from the front cover.
  24.  
  25. Remove the oil pump drive spacer and oil pump.
  26.  
  27. Compress the left side chain tensioner and install a pin through the hole to secure it, then remove the tensioner.
  28.  
  29. Remove the chain tensioner, tension guide and slack guide.
  30.  
  31. Remove the left side timing chain.
  32.  
  33. While holding the camshaft in place, remove the left side camshaft sprockets.
  34.  
  35. Repeat the procedure on the right side to remove the chain tensioner, guides, timing chain and camshaft sprockets.
  36.

To install:

  1. Be sure the crankshaft key is pointing toward the center of the left bank. This should be a 45° angle from the center. Check that the camshaft dowel pins are in the correct location as shown.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft sprockets by holding the camshaft with a wrench and tightening the sprocket bolts to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm).
     
    Crankshaft sprockets and be sure the thick side of the sprocket faces the cylinder block to provide clearance between the block and chain.
     
    Right bank timing chain by aligning the marks on the chain with the marks on the sprockets
     
    Right slack and chain guides. Be sure to install the bolts in the correct locations. Torque the bolts to 10-14 ft. lbs. (13-19 Nm).
     
    Timing chain for the left bank in the same manner as the right one
     
    Left slack and chain guide. Torque the bolts to 10-14 ft. lbs. (13-19 Nm).
     
    Chain tensioners with the pins installed using new gaskets. Torque the bolts to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm) and remove the pins.
     

  4.  
  5. Confirm that the timing marks on the crankshaft sprockets and chains are still aligned.

    Oil pump and tighten the bolts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
     
    Oil pump drive spacer, aligning the spacer key groove with the crankshaft key, and tapping it in with a plastic hammer
     
    New seal into the front cover until it is flush with the cover face
     
    Chain tensioner cover after applying liquid gasket to the mating surface. Tighten the bolts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
     
    New O-rings into the block and cylinder heads
     
    Front cover after applying liquid gasket to the mating surface. Be sure to install the bolts in the correct locations. Tighten the bolts in sequence to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
     
    Timing control cover using new O-rings and after applying liquid gasket to the mating surface. Tighten the bolts in sequence to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).

  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft pulley so it aligns with the dowel pin of the oil pump drive spacer.
  8.  
  9. Apply clean engine oil the crankshaft pulley bolt and tighten the bolt to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm), plus an additional 90°.
  10.  
  11. Installation of the remaining components is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  12.  
  13. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  14.  
  15. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
