Removal & Installation



3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the necessary components in order to gain access to the valve cover retaining bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve cover retaining bolts in the proper sequence.

  9. Remove the valve cover from the engine.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Remove all gasket material from the valve cover prior to installation.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new gaskets and the proper grade and type sealant, as required.
  4.  
  5. Install the valve cover to the engine.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the retaining bolts in two passes, as follows: bolts 1-10 (in that order) to 61-78 inch lbs., and again to 61-78 inch lbs.

  9. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks. Correct as required.

3.5L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower intake manifold collectors.
  6.  
  7. Separate the engine harness by removing the brackets from the rocker covers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition coil.
  10.  
  11. Remove the PCV hoses from the covers.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the bolts in the reverse order of the illustration.

  15. Remove the valve covers from the engine.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Remove all gasket material from the valve cover prior to installation.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket (0.12 inch) diameter as shown in the illustration.
    NOTE
    Both edges of the camshaft bracket (No. 1) on both banks. First apply the sealant to the engine in a longitudinal direction (0.197 inch plus 0.197 inch side in figure.

  5. Install the valve cover.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the retaining bolts in two steps and in the proper sequence.
  8.  
  9. Step one 9-26 inch lbs (0.96-2.96 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Step two 65-82 inch lbs (7.33-9.33 Nm).

  13. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower intake manifold collectors.
  6.  
  7. Separate the engine harness by removing the brackets from the rocker covers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition coil.
  10.  
  11. Remove the PCV hoses from the covers.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the bolts in the reverse order of the illustration.

  15. Remove the valve covers from the engine.

To install:

  1. Remove all gasket material from the valve cover prior to installation.
  2.  
  3. Install the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the retaining bolts in two steps and in the proper sequence.
  6.  
  7. Step one 9-26 inch lbs (0.96-2.96 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Step two 65-82 inch lbs (7.33-9.33 Nm).

  11. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

4.1L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the necessary components in order to gain access to the valve cover retaining bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve cover retaining bolts in the reverse order of the installation sequence.
  8.  
  9. Remove the valve cover from the engine.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Remove all gasket material from the valve cover prior to installation.
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker cover gasket in the rocker cover groove.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to use new gaskets and the proper grade and type sealant, as required.
  6.  
  7. Apply a continuous bead of sealant to the gasket arch using the dimensions shown in the illustration.

  9. Apply a continuous bead of sealant where the rubber plugs are inserted in the cylinder head and mating surfaces of the front cover and cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. Install the valve cover to the engine.
  12.  
  13. Tighten bolts 1-16 (in that order) to 35-52 inch lbs. (4-6 Nm.).
  14.  
  15. Tighten bolts 1-16 (in that order) to 61-78 inch lbs. (7-9 Nm.).
  16.  
  17. Tighten bolts 1and 2 (in that order) to 61-78 inch lbs. (7-9 Nm.).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine cover.
  6.  
  7. If removing the left cover, remove the air duct and air cleaner case assembly. Remove the No. 6 camshaft bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition coil.
  10.  
  11. Remove the PCV valve hose from the PCV valve.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the valve cover retaining bolts in the reverse order, as shown in the illustration.
    NOTE
    If removing the right cover, do not hold the oil filler neck, as damage may result.

  15. Remove the valve covers from the engine.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Remove all gasket material from the valve cover prior to installation.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket to the joint part of the cylinder head and camshaft bracket.
    NOTE
    The illustration shows an example of the left side. Apply only to No. 1 camshaft bracket for right side.

  4.  
  5. Refer to the illustration point -a- to apply liquid gasket to the joint part of the No. 1 and No. 6 camshaft bracket and cylinder head.
  6.  
  7. Refer to the illustration point -b- to apply liquid gasket 90 degrees to illustration point -a-.

  9. Install the valve cover. Be sure that the gasket does not drop from the installation groove of the cover.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the retaining bolts in two steps and in the proper sequence.
  12.  
  13. Step one 18 inch lbs (2.0 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Step two 74 inch lbs (8.4 Nm).

  17. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
