Fuel Pump



Removal & Installation
2.0L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Release the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear seat back and bottom
     
    Inspection hole cover located beneath the rear seat
     
    Connectors and fuel tubes
     
    Six screws
     
    Fuel pump/gauge assembly and disconnect the tubes and connector
     
    Fuel pump by sliding it out on an angle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel pump/gauge assembly
     
    All fuel lines and connectors
     
    Six screws
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Install the inspection cover.
  6.  
  7. Rear seat back and bottom.
  8.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Release the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear seat back and bottom
     
    Inspection hole cover located beneath the rear seat
     
    Connectors and fuel tubes
     
    Six screws
     
    Fuel pump/gauge assembly and disconnect the tubes and connector
     
    Fuel pump by sliding it out on an angle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel pump/gauge assembly
     
    All fuel lines and connectors
     
    Six screws
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Install the inspection cover.
  6.  
  7. Rear seat back and bottom.
  8.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    If the vehicle has no fuel pump access cover, the fuel tank must be lowered or removed to gain access to the in-tank fuel pump.


    NOTE
    When removing or installing the fuel pump assembly, be careful not to damage or deform it and always install a new O-ring.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Access panel under the rear seat
     



    Fuel gauge electrical connector and pump electrical connector
     
    Fuel outlet and the return hoses
     
    Fuel pump assembly-to-fuel tank bolts and lift the fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank. Discard the O-ring. Plug the fuel tank opening with a clean rag to prevent dirt from entering the system
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Remove the rag from the fuel tank opening.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank with a new O-ring. Tighten the bolts to 17-23 inch lbs. (2.0-2.5 Nm)
     
    Fuel lines and the electrical connectors. Always use new clamps when reconnecting fuel line hoses.
     
    Fuel pump access cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the engine, check for fuel leaks and repair if necessary.
    NOTE
    On some models, the Check Engine Light will stay ON after installation is completed. The memory code in the control unit must be erased. This code is stored for an open fuel pump circuit, this is caused when the fuel pressure is released. To erase the code, disconnect the battery cable for 10 seconds, then reconnect after installation of fuel pump.

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    If replacement of the fuel filter is required, proceed with the following steps.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear seat bottom
     
    Inspection hole cover from under the rear seat
     
    Electrical and quick connectors
     
    Six screws
     
    Fuel level sensor/fuel pump assembly
     



    Fuel level sensor/fuel pump assembly flange
     
    Fuel tank temperature sensor harness
     
    Fuel level sensor flange and raise the fuel level sensor
     
    Fuel pump electrical connector
     
    Quick connectors from the fuel level sensor
     
    Fuel level sensor from the assembly
     
    Snap fit connectors and remove the fuel filter from the fuel pump assembly
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel filter to the fuel pump assembly
     
    Fuel level sensor to the fuel pump assembly
     
    Fuel level sensor quick connectors
     
    Electrical connectors
     
    Fuel tank temperature sensor harness
     
    Fuel level sensor unit and fuel pump flanges. Make certain that they snap together
     
    Fuel pump assembly to the fuel tank
     
    Six screws
     
    Quick and electrical connectors
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Install the inspection hole cover plate.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear seat bottom.
  8.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    If replacement of the fuel filter is required, proceed with the following steps.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear seat bottom
     
    Inspection hole cover from under the rear seat
     
    Electrical and quick connectors
     
    Six screws
     
    Fuel level sensor/fuel pump assembly
     



    Fuel level sensor/fuel pump assembly flange
     
    Fuel tank temperature sensor harness
     
    Fuel level sensor flange and raise the fuel level sensor
     
    Fuel pump electrical connector
     
    Quick connectors from the fuel level sensor
     
    Fuel level sensor from the assembly
     
    Snap fit connectors and remove the fuel filter from the fuel pump assembly
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel filter to the fuel pump assembly
     
    Fuel level sensor to the fuel pump assembly
     
    Fuel level sensor quick connectors
     
    Electrical connectors
     
    Fuel tank temperature sensor harness
     
    Fuel level sensor unit and fuel pump flanges. Make certain that they snap together.
     
    Fuel pump assembly to the fuel tank
     
    Six screws
     
    Quick and electrical connectors
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Install the inspection hole cover plate.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear seat bottom.
  8.  

4.1L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Trunk front finish panel
     
    Wiring harness connector and fuel tubes
     
    Fuel tank sender unit attaching bolts
     
    Fuel tank sender and discard the O-ring
     
    Fuel pump from the sender unit
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New fuel pump on the sender unit assembly
     
    Sender unit in the fuel tank, using a new O-ring. Torque the bolts to 17-23 inch lbs. (2-2.5 Nm)
     
    Wiring harness connectors and fuel tubes
     
    Trunk room finish panel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  4.  

4.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fuel filler cap
     
    Front finish panel
     
    Fuel pump connector
     
    Fuel feed line
     
    Fuel pump assembly
     
    Fuel pump
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  4.  

Fuel Rail (Supply Manifold) & Injectors



Removal & Installation
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Intake manifold collector
     
    Vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator
     
    Fuel hoses from fuel rail
     
    Fuel rail bolts
     
    Injector harness connectors
     
    Injectors and the fuel rail as an assembly
     
    Injector(s) from the fuel rail by pushing them out
     

  6.  
  7. Remove and discard the fuel injector O-rings
  8.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new O-rings with clean engine oil and install the O-rings on the injector(s).
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel injectors to the fuel rail
     
    Fuel rail and injectors as an assembly to the intake manifold
     

  4.  
  5. Tighten the fuel rail bolts in the following sequence;
    1. Step 1: 7-8 ft. lbs. (9-10 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: 15-20 ft. lbs. (21-26 Nm).

      Fuel hoses to the fuel rail
       
      Vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator
       
      Intake manifold collector
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    4.  

  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  8.  

4.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine appearance cover
     
    Fuel damper and hoses from fuel rail
     
    Fuel rail bolts
     
    Injector harness connectors
     
    Injectors and the fuel rail as an assembly

  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new O-rings with clean engine oil and install the O-rings on the injector(s). The Green O-ring goes on the bottom and the Black O-ring goes on the top of the injector.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel injectors to the fuel rail
     
    Fuel rail and injectors as an assembly to the intake manifold
     

  4.  
  5. Tighten the fuel rail bolts in the following sequence;
    1. Step 1: 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

      Fuel hoses to the fuel rail
       
      Fuel damper
       
      Engine appearance cover
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    4.  

  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  8.  

Except 4.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine cover, as necessary
     
    Intake manifold collector
     
    Vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator
     
    Fuel hoses from fuel rail
     
    Fuel rail bolts
     
    Injector harness connectors
     
    Injectors and the fuel rail as an assembly
     
    Injector(s) from the fuel rail by pushing them out
     

  6.  
  7. Remove and discard the fuel injector O-rings
  8.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new O-rings with clean engine oil and install the O-rings on the injector(s).
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel injectors to the fuel rail
     
    Fuel rail and injectors as an assembly to the intake manifold
     

  4.  
  5. Tighten the fuel rail bolts in the following sequence;
    1. Step 1: 7-8 ft. lbs. (9-10 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: 15-20 ft. lbs. (21-26 Nm).

      Fuel hoses to the fuel rail
       
      Vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator
       
      Intake manifold collector
       
      Engine cover, as necessary
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    4.

  7. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
