  1. Disconnect both battery cables, the negative (-) cable first.
  2.  


CAUTION
After disconnecting the battery, wait for a least 3 minutes for the SRS module to deplete its energy before working on the steering column or instrument panel.

  1. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  2.  
  3. Remove the driver-s side SRS module and the steering wheel by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Lower cover at the base of the steering wheel
     
    SRS module electrical connector
     
    Side covers at both sides of the steering wheel
     
    SRS module-to-steering wheel bolts using a T50 Torx®wrench
     
    SRS module from the steering wheel
     
    Place the front wheel in the straight-ahead position
     
    Horn connector and remove the steering wheel nut
     
    Steering wheel from the steering column
     

  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Dash side and floor trim
     
    Steering column cover screws and the covers
     
    Combination switch-to-steering column screws, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the combination switch
     
    Lower instrument panel screws and the panel at the driver-s side
     
    Lower instrument reinforcement bolts and the reinforcement
     
    Steering column-to-instrument panel nuts and lower the steering column
     
    Cluster lid -C--to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the cluster lid
     
    Cluster lid -A--to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the cluster lid
     
    Combination meter-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the combination meter
     
    Audio center-to-instrument panel bolts, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the audio center
     
    Air conditioning control unit-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the air conditioning control unit
     
    Console finisher clips and the console finisher
     
    Console box assembly-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the console box assembly
     
    Glove box assembly-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the lamp socket and remove the glove box assembly
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the passenger-s side SRS module by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Open the glove box and remove the SRS module cover
     
    SRS module electrical connector
     
    Glove box assembly
     
    SRS module-to-instrument panel bolts using a T50 Torx® wrench
     
    SRS module from the instrument panel
     

  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower instrument cover clip and the cover
     
    Lower instrument panel center-to-instrument panel screws and the panel
     
    Connectors and remove the defroster grilles
     
    Front pillar garnish
     
    Instrument panel-to-chassis bolts/nuts and the instrument panel
     
    Heater hoses from the heater core
     
    Rear duct from the heater unit
     
    Air conditioning housing-to-heater housing fasteners
     
    Heater housing-to-chassis fasteners
     
    Heater unit from the vehicle
     

  10.  
  11. Disassemble and remove the heater core from the heater housing.

To install:

  1. Assemble and install the heater core to the heater housing.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Heater unit to the vehicle
     
    Heater housing-to-chassis fasteners
     
    Air conditioning housing-to-heater housing fasteners
     
    Rear duct to the heater unit
     
    Heater hoses to the heater core
     
    Instrument panel and the instrument panel-to-chassis bolts/nuts
     
    Front pillar garnish
     
    Defroster grilles and connect the connectors
     
    Lower instrument panel center and the panel-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Lower instrument cover and the cover clip
     

  4.  
  5. Install the passenger-s side SRS module by installing or connecting the following:

    SRS module to the instrument panel
     
    SRS module-to-instrument panel bolts and torque the bolts using a T50 Torx® wrench to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm)
     
    Glove box assembly
     
    SRS module electrical connector
     
    SRS module cover
     

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Glove box assembly, connect the lamp socket and install the glove box assembly-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Console box assembly, connect the electrical connectors and install the console box assembly-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Console finisher and engage the clips
     
    Air conditioning control unit, connect the electrical connectors and Install the air conditioning control unit-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Audio center, connect the electrical connectors and Install the audio center-to-instrument panel bolts
     
    Combination meter, connect the electrical connectors and install the combination meter-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Cluster lid -A-, connect the electrical connectors and install the cluster lid-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Cluster lid -C-, connect the electrical connectors and install the cluster lid-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Steering column and torque the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 Nm)
     
    Lower instrument reinforcement and the reinforcement bolts
     
    Lower instrument panel and the panel screws at the driver-s side
     
    Combination switch and the combination switch-to-steering column screws and connect the electrical harness connectors
     
    Steering column covers and the cover screws
     
    Dash side and floor trim
     

  8.  
  9. Install the driver-s side SRS module and the steering wheel by installing or connecting the following:

    Steering wheel to the steering column
     
    Steering wheel nut and torque to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm). Connect the horn connector
     
    SRS module to the steering wheel
     
    Torque the SRS module-to-steering wheel bolts to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm) using a T50 Torx® wrench
     
    Side covers at both sides of the steering wheel
     
    SRS module electrical connector
     
    Lower cover at the base of the steering wheel
     

  10.  
  11. Refill the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Connect both battery cables, the negative (-) cable last.
  14.  
  15. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
  16.  

1998-2001
  1. Disconnect both battery cables, the negative (() cable first.
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the battery, wait for a least 3 minutes for the SRS module to deplete its energy before working on the steering column or instrument panel.

  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Remove the driver-s side SRS module and the steering wheel by removing or disconnecting the following:

    SRS module electrical connector
     
    Side covers at both sides of the steering wheel
     
    SRS module-to-steering wheel bolts using a T50 Torx®wrench
     
    SRS module from the steering wheel
     
    Place the front wheel in the straight-ahead position
     
    Horn connector and remove the steering wheel nut
     
    Steering wheel from the steering column
     

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Dash side and floor trim
     
    Steering column cover screws and the covers
     
    Combination switch-to-steering column screws, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the combination switch
     
    Lower instrument panel screws and the panel at the driver-s side
     
    Lower instrument reinforcement bolts and the reinforcement
     
    Steering column-to-instrument panel nuts and lower the steering column
     
    Cluster lid -C--to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the cluster lid
     
    Cluster lid -A--to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the cluster lid
     
    Combination meter-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the combination meter
     
    Audio center-to-instrument panel bolts, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the audio center
     
    Air conditioning control unit-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the air conditioning control unit
     
    Console finisher clips and the console finisher
     
    Console box assembly-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the console box assembly
     
    Glove box assembly-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the lamp socket and remove the glove box assembly
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the passenger-s side SRS module by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Open the glove box and remove the SRS module cover
     
    SRS module electrical connector
     
    Glove box assembly
     
    SRS module-to-instrument panel bolts using a T50 Torx® wrench
     
    SRS module from the instrument panel
     

  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower instrument cover clip and the cover
     
    Lower instrument panel center-to-instrument panel screws and the panel
     
    Connectors and remove the defroster grilles
     
    Front pillar garnish
     
    Instrument panel-to-chassis bolts/nuts and the instrument panel
     
    Heater hoses from the heater core
     
    Rear duct from the heater unit
     
    Air conditioning housing-to-heater housing fasteners
     
    Heater housing-to-chassis fasteners
     
    Heater unit from the vehicle
     

  12.  
  13. Disassemble and remove the heater core from the heater housing.

To install:

  1. Assemble and install the heater core to the heater housing.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Heater unit to the vehicle
     
    Heater housing-to-chassis fasteners
     
    Air conditioning housing-to-heater housing fasteners
     
    Rear duct to the heater unit
     
    Heater hoses to the heater core
     
    Instrument panel and the instrument panel-to-chassis bolts/nuts
     
    Front pillar garnish
     
    Defroster grilles and connect the connectors
     
    Lower instrument panel center and the panel-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Lower instrument cover and the cover clip
     

  4.  
  5. Install the passenger-s side SRS module by installing or connecting the following:

    SRS module to the instrument panel
     
    SRS module-to-instrument panel bolts and torque the bolts using a T50 Torx® wrench to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm)
     
    Glove box assembly
     
    SRS module electrical connector
     
    SRS module cover
     

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Glove box assembly, connect the lamp socket and install the glove box assembly-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Console box assembly, connect the electrical connectors and install the console box assembly-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Console finisher and engage the clips
     
    Air conditioning control unit, connect the electrical connectors and Install the air conditioning control unit-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Audio center, connect the electrical connectors and Install the audio center-to-instrument panel bolts
     
    Combination meter, connect the electrical connectors and Install the combination meter-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Cluster lid -A-, connect the electrical connectors and install the cluster lid-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Cluster lid -C-, connect the electrical connectors and install the cluster lid-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Steering column and torque the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 Nm)
     
    Lower instrument reinforcement and the reinforcement bolts
     
    Lower instrument panel and the panel screws at the driver-s side
     
    Combination switch and the combination switch-to-steering column screws and connect the electrical harness connectors
     
    Steering column covers and the cover screws
     
    Dash side and floor trim
     

  8.  
  9. Install the driver-s side SRS module and the steering wheel by installing or connecting the following:

    Steering wheel to the steering column
     
    Steering wheel nut and torque to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm). Connect the horn connector
     
    SRS module to the steering wheel
     
    Torque the SRS module-to-steering wheel bolts to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm) using a T50 Torx® wrench
     
    Side covers at both sides of the steering wheel
     
    SRS module electrical connector

  11. Refill the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Connect both battery cables, the negative (() cable last.

    Place the front wheel in the straight-ahead position
     
    Horn connector and remove the steering wheel nut
     
    Steering wheel from the steering column
     

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Dash side and floor trim
     
    Steering column cover screws and the covers
     
    Combination switch-to-steering column screws, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the combination switch
     
    Lower instrument panel screws and the panel at the driver-s side
     
    Lower instrument reinforcement bolts and the reinforcement
     
    Steering column-to-instrument panel nuts and lower the steering column
     
    Cluster lid -C--to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the cluster lid
     
    Cluster lid -A--to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the cluster lid
     
    Combination meter-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the combination meter
     
    Audio center-to-instrument panel bolts, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the audio center
     
    Air conditioning control unit-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the air conditioning control unit
     
    Console finisher clips and the console finisher
     
    Console box assembly-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the console box assembly
     
    Glove box assembly-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the lamp socket and remove the glove box assembly
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the passenger-s side SRS module by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Open the glove box and remove the SRS module cover
     
    SRS module electrical connector
     
    Glove box assembly
     
    SRS module-to-instrument panel bolts using a T50 Torx® wrench
     
    SRS module from the instrument panel
     

  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower instrument cover clip and the cover
     
    Lower instrument panel center-to-instrument panel screws and the panel
     
    Connectors and remove the defroster grilles
     
    Front pillar garnish
     
    Instrument panel-to-chassis bolts/nuts and the instrument panel
     
    Heater hoses from the heater core
     
    Rear duct from the heater unit
     
    Air conditioning housing-to-heater housing fasteners
     
    Heater housing-to-chassis fasteners
     
    Heater unit from the vehicle

  13. Disassemble and remove the heater core from the heater housing.

  5. Install the passenger-s side SRS module by installing or connecting the following:

    SRS module to the instrument panel
     
    SRS module-to-instrument panel bolts and torque the bolts using a T50 Torx® wrench to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm)
     
    Glove box assembly
     
    SRS module electrical connector
     
    SRS module cover
     

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Glove box assembly, connect the lamp socket and install the glove box assembly-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Console box assembly, connect the electrical connectors and install the console box assembly-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Console finisher and engage the clips
     
    Air conditioning control unit, connect the electrical connectors and Install the air conditioning control unit-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Audio center, connect the electrical connectors and Install the audio center-to-instrument panel bolts
     
    Combination meter, connect the electrical connectors and Install the combination meter-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Cluster lid -A-, connect the electrical connectors and install the cluster lid-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Cluster lid -C-, connect the electrical connectors and install the cluster lid-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Steering column and torque the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 Nm)
     
    Lower instrument reinforcement and the reinforcement bolts
     
    Lower instrument panel and the panel screws at the driver-s side
     
    Combination switch and the combination switch-to-steering column screws and connect the electrical harness connectors
     
    Steering column covers and the cover screws
     
    Dash side and floor trim
     

  8.  
  9. Install the driver-s side SRS module and the steering wheel by installing or connecting the following:

    Steering wheel to the steering column
     
    Steering wheel nut and torque to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm). Connect the horn connector
     
    SRS module to the steering wheel
     
    Torque the SRS module-to-steering wheel bolts to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm) using a T50 Torx® wrench

  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Dash side and floor trim
     
    Steering column cover screws and the covers
     
    Combination switch-to-steering column screws, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the combination switch
     
    Lower instrument panel screws and the panel at the driver-s side
     
    Lower instrument reinforcement bolts and the reinforcement
     
    Steering column-to-instrument panel nuts and lower the steering column
     
    Cluster lid -C--to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the cluster lid
     
    Cluster lid -A--to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the cluster lid
     
    Combination meter-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the combination meter
     
    Audio center-to-instrument panel bolts, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the audio center
     
    Air conditioning control unit-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the air conditioning control unit
     
    Console finisher clips and the console finisher
     
    Console box assembly-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the console box assembly
     
    Glove box assembly-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the lamp socket and remove the glove box assembly
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the passenger-s side SRS module by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Open the glove box and remove the SRS module cover
     
    SRS module electrical connector
     
    Glove box assembly
     
    SRS module-to-instrument panel bolts using a T50 Torx wrench
     
    SRS module from the instrument panel
     

  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower instrument cover clip and the cover
     
    Lower instrument panel center-to-instrument panel screws and the panel
     
    Connectors and remove the defroster grilles
     
    Front pillar garnish
     
    Instrument panel-to-chassis bolts/nuts and the instrument panel
     
    Heater hoses from the heater core
     
    Rear duct from the heater unit
     
    Air conditioning housing-to-heater housing fasteners
     
    Heater housing-to-chassis fasteners
     
    Heater unit from the vehicle
     

  12.  
  13. Disassemble and remove the heater core from the heater housing.

    Lower instrument panel center and the panel-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Lower instrument cover and the cover clip
     

  4.  
  5. Install the passenger-s side SRS module by installing or connecting the following:

    SRS module to the instrument panel
     
    SRS module-to-instrument panel bolts and torque the bolts using a T50 Torx wrench to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm)
     
    Glove box assembly
     
    SRS module electrical connector
     
    SRS module cover
     

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Glove box assembly, connect the lamp socket and install the glove box assembly-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Console box assembly, connect the electrical connectors and install the console box assembly-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Console finisher and engage the clips
     
    Air conditioning control unit, connect the electrical connectors and Install the air conditioning control unit-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Audio center, connect the electrical connectors and Install the audio center-to-instrument panel bolts
     
    Combination meter, connect the electrical connectors and Install the combination meter-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Cluster lid -A-, connect the electrical connectors and install the cluster lid-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Cluster lid -C-, connect the electrical connectors and install the cluster lid-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Steering column and torque the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 Nm)
     
    Lower instrument reinforcement and the reinforcement bolts
     
    Lower instrument panel and the panel screws at the driver-s side
     
    Combination switch and the combination switch-to-steering column screws and connect the electrical harness connectors
     
    Steering column covers and the cover screws
     
    Dash side and floor trim
     

  8.  
  9. Install the driver-s side SRS module and the steering wheel by installing or connecting the following:

    Steering wheel to the steering column
     
    Steering wheel nut and torque to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm). Connect the horn connector
     
    SRS module to the steering wheel
     
    Torque the SRS module-to-steering wheel bolts to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm) using a T50 Torx wrench
     
    Side covers at both sides of the steering wheel
     
    SRS module electrical connector
     
    Lower cover at the base of the steering wheel
     

  10.  
  11. Refill the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Connect both battery cables, the negative (() cable last.

  15. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.

  1. Disconnect both battery cables, the negative (() cable first.
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the battery, wait for a least 3 minutes for the SRS module to deplete its energy before working on the steering column or instrument panel.

  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Use a refrigerant collecting equipment (for HFC-134a) to discharge refrigerant.
  6.  
  7. Remove cowl top cover as follows:

    Remove hood ledge cover.
     
    Remove both right/left wiper arms.
     
    Remove cowl top seal rubber.
     
    Remove clips, cap of cowl top cover and remove cowl top cover (right).
     
    Remove clips, cap, screws and remove cowl top cover (left).
     
    Remove washer nozzles and hose from cowl top cover.
     

  8.  
  9. Disconnect low-pressure flexible hose and high-pressure pipe from evaporator.
    WARNING
    Cap or wrap the joint of the pipe with suitable material such as vinyl tape to avoid the entry of air.

  10.  
  11. Remove air hose and electronic control throttle assembly.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect two heater hoses from heater core.
  14.  
  15. Remove instrument panel assembly as follows:
    WARNING
    Guide pin inserted into automatic transmission device guide can be easily broken; exercise caution during removal.



    Remove shift knob (manual transmission)/gear selector knob (automatic transmission)
     
    Place selector lever in DRIVE position (automatic transmission)
     
    Insert a thin flat-bladed screwdriver wrapped with tape from behind console boot/console finisher and remove metal clip(s) on back, then remove clips at front (automatic transmission). Then pull up and back to disengage from console.
     



    Disconnect hazard switch harness connector, and remove console boot/console finisher.

    Cluster Lid -C- side finisher screws (left and right) and pawls; remove finisher
     
    Upper Cluster Lid finisher clips and pawls; remove finisher

    Instrument Panel finisher -B- clips; remove finisher
     
    Cluster Lid -C- screws; disconnect display/audio unit harness connector and remove unit
     
    Driver Side Lower Instrument Panel screws and clips; disconnect harness connectors and remove panel

    Front lower steering column cover
     
    Upper and lower side steering column covers
     
    Lighting and turn signal switch
     
    Wiper and washer switch
     
    Lower knee protector
     
    Steering column lock escutcheon
     
    Cluster Lid -A- bolts; disconnect combination meter and mirror control switch harness connectors and remove cluster lid
     
    Left and right front kick panels
     
    Left and right dash side finishers
     
    Right side lower instrument panel cover
     
    Glove box assembly
     
    Left and right Instrument Side Panels
     
    Center box assembly
     
    Navigation Control Unit screws and harness connector; remove control unit
     
    Passenger side Air Bag Module
     
    Center console
     
    Display and Amplifier Assembly screws and harness connector; remove assembly
     
    Left and right front defroster grilles
     
    Left side ventilator grille
     
    Center ventilator grille
     
    Left and right front pillar garnish
     
    Lower steering column and remove instrument panel bolts and screws; remove instrument panel and pad through passenger-side door

  19. Remove Engine Control Module (ECM) with bracket attached

  21. Remove blower assembly mounting bolt and screws; disconnect harness connectors

    WARNING
    Move assembly toward right side and remove locating pin and joint; remove assembly downward

  25. Remove clips of vehicle harness from steering member.

  27. Remove mounting nuts and bolts, and then remove instrument stays (driver side and passenger side).

  29. Remove mounting bolts from heater & cooling unit.

  31. Disconnect drain hose.

  33. Remove defroster nozzle and ventilator ducts.

  35. Remove steering member, and then remove heater & cooling assembly.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse order of removal; observe the following:

    Replace air conditioning O-rings with new O-rings
     
    Exercise caution when reassembling air conditioning piping; the connection points are thin and deform easily.
     
    Tighten heater & cooling assembly mounting bolts to 61 inch lbs. (6.9 Nm)
     
    Tighten steering member mounting nut and bolt to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm)

  3. Refill cooling system and check for leaks.
  4.  
  5. Recharge air conditioning system and check for leaks.

    Heater unit attaching bolts. Remove the heater unit from the passenger compartment

  11. Disassemble the heater unit and remove the heater core.
