Removal & Installation




CAUTION
The amount of force need to loosen the rear wheel bearing nut is high enough to cause the vehicle to fall off the jack. Loosen and tighten this nut with the vehicle on the ground.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel cotter pin, adjusting cap and insulator. Loosen the wheel bearing nut with the brakes applied and the vehicle sitting on the ground.
     

  4.  
  5. Raise the vehicle and support safely.

    Rear wheel
     
    Differential side flange bolts and nuts and separate shaft from the differential
     
    Wheel bearing locknut and washer from halfshaft
     
    Halfshaft by lightly tapping it with a copper hammer
     
    Halfshaft assembly from the vehicle

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft into wheel hub and install washer and wheel bearing locknut; temporarily tighten the locknut.
     
    Halfshaft with the differential side flange. Install the nuts and bolts and tighten to 61-69 ft. lbs. (83-93 Nm) for the Q45 or to 47-57 ft. lbs. (64-78 Nm) for the G35.
     
    Wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground
     
    Torque the wheel bearing locknut with the brakes applied to 152-201 ft. lbs. (206-274 Nm)
     
    Insulator, adjusting cap and a new cotter pin

  5. Raise the vehicle and support safely.

    Rear wheel
     
    Differential side flange bolts and nuts and separate shaft from the differential
     
    Wheel bearing locknut and washer from halfshaft
     
    Halfshaft by lightly tapping it with a copper hammer
     
    Halfshaft assembly from the vehicle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft into wheel hub and install washer and wheel bearing locknut. Temporarily tighten the locknut
     
    Halfshaft with the differential side flange. Install the nuts and bolts and tighten to 61-69 ft. lbs. (83-93 Nm)
     
    Wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground
     
    Torque the wheel bearing locknut with the brakes applied to 152-203 ft. lbs. (206-275 Nm)
     
    Insulator, adjusting cap and a new cotter pin

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel cotter pin, adjusting cap and insulator. Loosen the wheel bearing nut with the brakes applied
     
    Exhaust center tube
     
    Final drive-to-axle shaft nuts and bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Using a puller, separate the axle shaft from the axle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the axle shaft.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure noting the following:

  3. Tighten the axle flange-to-axle shaft nuts to 47-58 ft. lbs. (63-79 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the axle shaft nut to 152-202 ft. lbs. (206-274 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Always install new cotter pins.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cotter pin. Remove the locknut from the halfshaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer connecting rod mounting bracket bolt and the stabilizer connecting rod.
  10.  
  11. Remove the retaining nuts and bolts between the side flange and halfshaft.
  12.  
  13. Using a suitable puller remove the halfshaft from the axle.
    NOTE
    When removing the halfshaft, do not apply excessive force to the halfshaft joint. Also be careful not to excessively extend the slide joint.

  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    NOTE
    Before removing the halfshaft assembly, disconnect the ABS wheel sensor to prevent damage to the sensor. Cover the halfshaft boots with a shop towel so as not to damage them when removing the halfshaft.

  6.  
  7. To remove the final drive side halfshaft, remove the side flange mounting bolt and separate the shaft.
  8.  
  9. To remove the wheel side halfshaft, lightly tap it with a copper hammer. If it is hard to remove use a puller.
    NOTE
    To avoid damaging the threads of the halfshaft, install the locknut while removing the shaft.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
