Spark Plugs

Inspection



Inspect the spark plug tip for wear and damage. If the tip is covered with carbon, replace the plug. Do not drop or shock the spark plug. If the ceramic body is broken replace the plug.

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ignition wires from the spark plugs. Do not pull on the wire.
  4.  
  5. Remove the spark plug using a spark plug socket and wrench.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Be sure the spark plug gap is to specification, 0.043 inch for platinum tip plug and 0.031-0.035 inch for conventional plug.
  2.  
  3. Carefully install the spark plug and torque to specification, 14-22 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Install the ignition wires.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spark plug using a spark plug socket and wrench.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Be sure the spark plug gap is to specification, 0.043 inch.
  2.  
  3. Carefully install the spark plug and torque to specification, 15-21 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the left side rocker cover ornament.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil harness connectors.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the ignition coil retaining bolts and pull the coil out from the intake manifold collector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spark plug using a spark plug socket and wrench.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Be sure the spark plug gap is to specification, 0.043 inch.
  2.  
  3. Carefully install the spark plug and torque to specification, 14-22 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the intake manifold upper and lower collectors.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ignition coil harness connectors.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the ignition coil retaining bolts. Pull the coil from the rocker cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spark plug using a spark plug socket and wrench.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Be sure the spark plug gap is to specification, 0.043 inch.
  2.  
  3. Carefully install the spark plug and torque to specification, 14-22 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spark plug using a spark plug socket and wrench.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Be sure the spark plug gap is to specification, 0.043 inch.
  2.  
  3. Carefully install the spark plug and torque to specification, 14-22 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air duct.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ornament cover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ignition coil harness connector.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the ignition coil retaining bolts and pull out the ignition coil.
  10.  
  11. Remove the spark plug using a spark plug socket and wrench.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Be sure the spark plug gap is to specification, 0.043 inch.
  2.  
  3. Carefully install the spark plug and torque to specification, 14-22 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spark plug using a spark plug socket and wrench.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Be sure the spark plug gap is to specification, 0.043 inch.
  2.  
  3. Carefully install the spark plug and torque to specification, 14-22 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
