NOTE
Before servicing, or working around, the SRS system, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least three minutes. When servicing, or working around, the SRS system do not work directly in front of the air bag module.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Position the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retaining bolt and nut from the upper joint. Remove the upper joint collar from the steering column assembly and lower shaft.

  9. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower joint retaining bolts, then remove the lower joint from the steering gear assembly and lower shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower shaft from the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the clamp, then remove the hole cover seal from the hole cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the mounting bolts of the hole cover, then remove the clamp and hole cover from the dash panel.
  20.  
  21. Remove the side lids. Using the proper Torx head tool, remove the left and right special bolts.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the steering wheel switch sub harness connector. Disconnect the air bag harness connector.
  24.  
  25. Remove the air bag module.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering wheel retaining bolt. Using the proper removal tool, remove the steering wheel.
  28.  
  29. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  30.  
  31. Remove the steering column cover front lower and steering lock escutcheon.
  32.  
  33. Remove the driver-s side lower instrument panel.
  34.  
  35. Loosen the spiral cable retaining screws. Remove the spiral cable.
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the spiral cable. Do not apply lubricant to the spiral cable.

  37. Disconnect the horn switch connector and then the spiral cable connectors.
    NOTE
    Do not tap or bump the steering wheel.

  39. Remove the wiper switch and lighting switch from the spiral cable.
    NOTE
    With the steering linkage disconnected, the spiral cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns. The spiral cable can be turned counterclockwise about 2.5 turns from the right end position.

  41. Remove the lower knee protector. Remove the cluster lid (A).
  42.  
  43. Remove the key interlock cable.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect each switch connectors that are installed on the steering column assembly. Disconnect the harness from the column.
  46.  
  47. Remove the retaining bolt and nut of the upper joint (upper side).
  48.  
  49. Remove the steering column retaining bolts and nuts. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
  50.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure the front wheels are in the straight position.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to align the spiral cable correctly when installing the steering wheel. Make sure that the spiral cable is in the neutral position.
    NOTE
    The neutral position is detected by turning to the left 2.5 revolutions from the right end position and ending with the knob at the top. The spiral cable may snap due to steering operation if the cable is installed incorrectly. Also, with the steering linkage disconnected the cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns (2.5 from the neutral position to both the left and right).

  7. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  8.  
  9. Be sure to use new retaining screws when installing the air bag module. Torque the special bolts to 11-18 inch lbs.
  10.  
  11. Perform the self diagnosis using the CONSULT-II tool or equivalent to ensure that the entire SRS system is operating properly.
  12.  
  13. Turn the steering wheel completely to the left detent and than to the right detent to be sure that the spiral cable is set in the neutral position.
  14.  
  15. If the air bag warning lamp blinks or stay ON (at the user mode) it shows that the spiral cable may be snapped due to improper positioning.
    NOTE
    If that-s the case perform the self diagnosis test again and replace the spiral cable as required.

NOTE
Before servicing, or working around, the SRS system, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least three minutes. When servicing, or working around, the SRS system do not work directly in front of the air bag module.


NOTE
Care must be taken not to give axial impact to the steering column assembly during this procedure. Care must be taken not to move the steering gear during removal of the steering column.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Position the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left and right steering switches.
  8.  
  9. Using the proper Torx head tool, remove the left and right special bolts.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the steering wheel switch sub harness connector. Disconnect the air bag harness connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the air bag module.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering upper and lower covers.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering column cover. Disconnect the spiral cable connector and horn connector.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering wheel retaining bolt. Using the proper removal tool, remove the steering wheel.
    NOTE
    Do not tap or bump the steering wheel.

  20.  
  21. Loosen the spiral cable retaining screws. Remove the spiral cable.
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the spiral cable. Do not apply lubricant to the spiral cable.

  22.  
  23. Remove the wiper switch and lighting switch from the spiral cable.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the horn switch connector and remove the spiral cable connector.
    NOTE
    With the steering linkage disconnected, the spiral cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns. The spiral cable can be turned counterclockwise about 2.5 turns from the right end position.

  27. Remove the hood opener.
  28.  
  29. Remove the ignition switch cover.
  30.  
  31. Remove the screw for the instrument lower driver-s panel (see illustration).

  33. Disconnect the TCS OFF switch harness connector and the data link connector for the CONSULT-II.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the steering lock harness connector from the steering column.
  36.  
  37. Remove the lower knee protector.
  38.  
  39. Separate the steering column shaft from the upper joint by loosening the nut of the special bolt for the lower yoke of the upper joint.
    NOTE
    Discard the nut, do not reuse it.

  40.  
  41. Turn the steering wheel to the left until the set ribs of the collar are visible.
  42.  
  43. Retain the steering shaft in place so that it does not rotate. Remove the special bolt and nut.
  44.  
  45. Expand the set ribs outside of the yoke, then disengage them from the yoke.
  46.  
  47. Raise the yoke to separate if from the collar. As a result, the steering column will separate from the upper joint.
    NOTE
    Be careful how you handle the collar, as it can easily be broken.

  49. Remove the mounting bolts and nuts from the steering column assembly. Remove the component from the vehicle.
  50.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    NOTE
    When the yoke of the upper joint and collar are connected with the special bolt, use a new nut.

  3. Be sure the front wheels are in the straight position.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to align the spiral cable correctly when installing the steering wheel. Make sure that the spiral cable is in the neutral position.
    NOTE
