  18.
  19. Remove the crankshaft position sensor (POS) from A/T assembly.
  20.
  21. When handling the POS, heed the following:

Do not subject it to impact by dropping or hitting it.

    Do not disassemble it.

Do not allow metal filings, etc., to get on the sensor's front edge magnetic area.

Do not place in an area affected by magnetism.

  22.
  23. Remove the starter motor, as follows:
    1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
    2.
    3. Remove the engine rear undercover.
    4.
    5. Disconnect the S connector.
    6.
    7. Remove the B terminal nut.
    8.
    9. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts and wiring harness clip bracket.
    10.
    11. Remove the starter motor toward the underside of the vehicle.
    12.

  24.
  25. Disconnect the A/T fluid cooler tube from the transmission assembly.
  26.
  27. Remove the dust cover from the converter housing part.
  28.
  29. Turn the crankshaft, and remove the four tightening bolts for the driveplate and torque converter.
    CAUTION
When turning the crankshaft, turn it clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine.

  30.
  31. For AWD models with the 3.5L engine, remove the dynamic damper.
  32.
  33. Support the transmission assembly with a transmission jack.
    CAUTION
When setting the transmission jack, be careful not to allow it to collide against the drain plug.

  34.
  35. Remove the engine rear member.
  36.
  37. Tilt the transmission slightly to keep the clearance between the body and the transmission, and then disconnect the air breather hose from the charging pipe.
  38.
  39. Disconnect the A/T assembly connector.
  40.
  41. Remove the A/T fluid charging pipe from the A/T assembly.
  42.
  43. Plug up the openings such as the fluid charge pipe hole, etc.
  44.
  45. Remove the bolts fixing the transmission assembly to the engine.
  46.
  47. Secure the torque converter to prevent it from dropping.
  48.
  49. Secure the transmission assembly to the jack.
  50.
  51. For 2WD models, remove the transmission assembly from the vehicle with the transmission jack.
  52.
  53. For AWD models, remove the transmission assembly with the transfer case from the vehicle with the transmission jack. Then remove the transfer mounting bolts and separate the transfer from the transmission.
  54.

To install:

  1. After inserting the torque converter to the transmission, be sure to check dimension A to ensure it is within the reference value limit of 0.98 in. (25.0mm).
    CAUTION
When setting the transmission jack, be careful not to allow it to collide against the drain plug.

  2.
  3. For AWD models, install the transfer case to the transmission assembly.
  4.
  5. Install the transmission assembly into the vehicle with the transmission jack.
  6.
  7. Install the bolts fixing the transmission assembly to the engine. Use the accompanying illustrations for installation torques.
  8.
  9. Unplug the fluid holes.
  10.
  11. Install the A/T fluid charging pipe onto the A/T assembly.
  12.
  13. Connect the A/T assembly connector.
  14.
  15. Install the air breather hose.
  16.
  17. Install the engine rear member.
  18.
  19. Carefully, remove the transmission jack.
    CAUTION
When turning the crankshaft, turn it clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine.

  20.
  21. For AWD models with the 3.5L engine, install the dynamic damper.
  22.
  23. Align the positions of tightening bolts for the driveplate with those of the torque converter, and temporarily tighten the bolts. Then, tighten the bolts with the specified torque. When tightening the tightening bolts for the torque converter, after fixing the crankshaft pulley bolts, be sure to confirm the tightening torque of the crankshaft pulley mounting bolts. After the converter is installed to the driveplate, rotate the crankshaft several turns and check to be sure that transmission rotates freely without binding.
  24.
  25. Install the dust cover onto the converter housing part.
  26.
  27. Install the fluid cooler tube.
  28.
  29. Install the starter motor, as follows:
    1. Install the starter motor on the engine.
    2.
    3. Install the starter motor mounting bolts and wiring harness clip bracket.
    4.
    5. Install the B terminal nut.
    6.
    7. Connect the S connector.
    8.
    9. Install the engine rear undercover.
    10.
    11. Connect the negative battery terminal.
    12.

  30.
  31. Install the crankshaft position sensor (POS) on the A/T assembly.
  32.
  33. Reattach the transmission shifter control rod by installing the snap pin retaining the control rod bracket to the control device assembly lever.
  34.

  42.
  43. Install the engine cover.
  44.
  45. Connect the negative battery terminal.
  46.
  47. Check the adjustment of the A/T position, as follows:
    1. Loosen the nut of the control rod.
    2.
    3. Place the PNP switch and selector lever in the P position.
    4.
    5. While pressing the lower lever toward the rear of the vehicle (in P position direction), tighten the nut to the specified torque.
      CAUTION
      Do not push the bracket.

    6.

  48.
  49. Check the A/T position, as follows:
    1. Place the selector lever in P position, and turn ignition switch ON (engine OFF).
    2.
    3. Make sure the selector lever can be shifted to positions other than P when the brake pedal is depressed. Also, make sure the selector lever can be shifted from P position only when the brake pedal is depressed.
    4.
    5. Move the selector lever and check for excessive effort, sticking, noise or rattle.
    6.
    7. Confirm the selector lever stops at each position with the feel of engagement when it is moved through all of the positions. Check whether or not the actual position the selector lever is in matches the position shown by the shift position indicator and the transmission body.
    8.
    9. The method of operating the lever to individual positions correctly should be as shown in the figure.
    10.
    11. When selector button is pressed in P, R, or N position without applying forward/backward force to the selector lever, check the button operation for sticking.
    12.
    13. Confirm the back-up lamps illuminate only when the lever is placed in the R position. Confirm the back-up lamps do not illuminate when the selector lever is pushed against the R position while in the P or N positions.
    14.
    15. Confirm the engine can only be started with the selector lever in the P and N positions.
    16.
    17. Make sure the transmission is locked completely in the P position.
    18.
    19. When the selector lever is set to manual shift gate, make sure the manual mode is displayed on the combination meter. Shift the selector lever to + and - sides, and make sure set shift position changes.
