4.5L Engine

Drive belt tension is not necessary, as it is automatically adjusted by the auto tensioner.

Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Except Power Steering Belt
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the air duct.
  6.
  7. With a box wrench, and while securely holding the hexagonal part in the pulley center of the auto tensioner, move the wrench handle in the direction of the arrow shown in the illustration.
    NOTE
Avoid placing your hand in a location where pinching may occur if the holding tool accidentally comes off. Do not loosen the hexagonal part in the center of the drive belt auto tensioner pulley (do not turn it clockwise). If turned clockwise, the complete drive belt auto tensioner must be replaced as a unit including the pulley.
