  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove the camshaft.
    NOTE
It is also possible to perform the following steps 2 and 3 just before removing camshaft.

  4.
  5. Temporarily support the front suspension member to support the engine.
    CAUTION
Temporary support means that the engine is adequately stable although the weight supported by the hoist may be released.

    NOTE
At the time of the start of this procedure the front suspension member is removed, and the cylinder head is hanged by the hoist with engine slinger installed.

  6.
  7. Release the hoist from hanging, then remove the engine slinger.
  8.
  9. Remove the fuel tube and fuel injector assembly.
  10.
  11. Remove the intake manifold.
  12.
  13. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  14.
  15. Remove the water inlet and thermostat housing.
  16.
  17. Remove the water outlet and water piping.
  18.
  19. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in the reverse of the tightening order.
  20.
  21. Remove the cylinder head.
  22.
  23. Remove the cylinder head gaskets.
  24.
  25. Inspect the cylinder head bolt diameters. The cylinder head bolts are tightened by the plastic zone tightening method. Whenever the size difference between d1 and d2 exceeds the limit, replace the bolt with a new one. The specification for d1-d2 for the cylinder head bolts is 0.0043 in. (0.11mm).
    NOTE
If the reduction of the outer diameter appears in a position other than at d2, use it as the d2 point value.

  26.
  27. Check the cylinder head for distortion. Using a scraper, wipe off oil, scale, gasket, sealant and carbon deposits from the surface of the cylinder head. At each of several locations on the bottom surface of the cylinder head, measure distortion in six directions. If cylinder head distortion exceeds the recommended limit of 0.004 in. (0.1mm), replace the cylinder head.
    CAUTION
Do not allow gasket fragments to enter engine oil or engine coolant passages.

  28.

To install:

  1. Install a new cylinder head gasket.
  2.
  3. Turn the crankshaft until No. 1 piston is set at TDC on the compression stroke. The crankshaft key should line up with the right bank cylinder center line.
  4.
  5. Install the cylinder head.
  6.
  7. Install and tighten the cylinder head bolts in the proper order as follows:
    1. Tighten all bolts to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm).
    2.
    3. Completely loosen all bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence.
    4.
    5. Retighten all bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
    6.
    7. Turn all bolts 90 degrees clockwise (angle tightening).
    8.
    9. Turn all bolts 90 degrees clockwise again (angle tightening).
      CAUTION
Check and confirm the tightening angle by using angle wrench or equivalent, and cylinder head bolt wrench (commercial service tool). Avoid tightening the bolts by eye.

    10.

  8.
  9. After installing the cylinder head, measure the distance between the front end faces of the cylinder block and the cylinder head (left and right banks). If the measurement is outside the specified range, re-install the cylinder head.
  10.
  11. Install the water outlet and water piping.
  12.
  13. Install the water inlet and thermostat housing.
  14.
  15. Install the exhaust manifold.
  16.
  17. Install the intake manifold.
  18.
  19. Install the fuel tube and fuel injector assembly.
  20.
  21. Install the camshaft.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
According to Nissan, cylinder head removal requires removal of the engine assembly from the vehicle.

  2.
  3. Remove the engine assembly from vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  6.
  7. Remove the camshaft.
  8.
  9. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in the reverse of the tightening order.
  10.
  11. Remove the cylinder head.
  12.
  13. Remove the cylinder head gaskets.
  14.
  15. Inspect the cylinder head bolt diameters. The cylinder head bolts are tightened by the plastic zone tightening method. Whenever the size difference between d1 and d2 exceeds the limit, replace the bolt with a new one. The specification for d1-d2 for the cylinder head bolts is 0.0071 in. (0.18mm)
    NOTE
If the reduction of the outer diameter appears in a position other than at d2, use it as the d2 point value.

  16.

  18.

To install:

  1. Install a new cylinder head gasket.
  2.
  3. Turn the crankshaft until No. 1 piston is set at TDC on the compression stroke. The crankshaft key should line up with the left bank cylinder center line.
  4.
  5. Install the cylinder head.
    CAUTION
If cylinder head bolts are to be re-used, check their outer diameters before installation.

  6.
  7. Install and tighten the cylinder head bolts in the proper order as follows:
    1. Tighten all bolts to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm).
    2.
    3. Completely loosen all bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence.
    4.
    5. Retighten all bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
    6.
    7. Turn all bolts 60 degrees clockwise (angle tightening).
    8.
    9. Turn all bolts 60 degrees clockwise again (angle tightening).
      CAUTION
Check and confirm the tightening angle by using angle wrench or equivalent.

    10.

  8.
  9. Install the camshaft.
  10.
