  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    WARNING
    To avoid the danger of being scalded, never drain engine oil or engine coolant when the engine is hot.


    NOTE
    To remove only the lower oil pan, perform step 5 then skip to step 25.

  3. Remove the front tire.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hood assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front and rear engine undercover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front cross bar.
  10.  
  11. Drain the engine oil.
  12.  
  13. Drain the engine coolant.
  14.  
  15. Remove the engine cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the air hose from the air duct to the mass air flow and the electric throttle control actuator side.
  18.  
  19. Remove the alternator and power steering pump and A/C compressor belt.
  20.  
  21. On AWD models, remove the front left and right halfshafts, and side shaft.
  22.  
  23. Remove the engine rear lower slinger, and install the engine rear slinger tool SST: 10006 31U00 (or equivalent) to hold the engine assembly in position. Tighten the engine rear slinger tool mounting bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).

  25. Remove the front suspension member.
  26.  
  27. On AWD models, remove the engine mounting bracket, lower engine mounting bracket and insulator.
  28.  
  29. On AWD models, remove the front driveshaft.
  30.  
  31. On AWD models, remove the oil filter and oil filter bracket.
  32.  
  33. Remove the alternator stay.
  34.  
  35. Remove the starter motor.
  36.  
  37. Remove the alternator and power steering pump and A/C compressor idler pulley and bracket assembly.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the A/T fluid cooler hoses, and remove the oil cooler water pipe mounting bolt.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the A/T fluid cooler tube.
  42.  
  43. On AWD models, remove the front final drive assembly. .
  44.  
  45. Remove the crankshaft position sensor (POS).
    CAUTION
    Handle the POS carefully to avoid dropping it and exposing it to abrupt shocks. Do not disassemble it, do not allow metal powder to adhere to magnetic part at the sensor tip, and do not place sensor in a location where it may be exposed to magnetism.

  47. Remove the oil filter, as necessary.
  48.  
  49. Remove the oil cooler, as necessary.
  50.  
  51. Remove the oil pan (lower), as follows:
    1. Loosen the mounting bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence.
    2.  
    3. Insert seal cutter SST: KV10111100 (J37228) or equivalent, between the upper oil pan and lower oil pan.
    4.  
    5. Slide the seal cutter by tapping on the side of the tool with a hammer.
    6.  
    7. Remove the lower oil pan.
      CAUTION
      Be careful not to damage the mating surface. Do not use a flat-bladed screwdriver-this will damage the mating surfaces.

  53. Remove the oil strainer.
  54.  
  55. Remove the transmission joint bolts which pass through the upper oil pan. .
  56.  
  57. On 2WD models, remove the rear cover plate.
  58.  
  59. Loosen the upper oil pan bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence.
  60.  
  61. Insert seal cutter SST: KV10111100 (J37228) between the upper oil pan and cylinder block. Slide the seal cutter by tapping on the side of the tool with a hammer.
  62.  
  63. Remove the upper oil pan.
    CAUTION
    Be careful not to damage the mating surface. Do not use a flat-bladed screwdriver-this will damage the mating surfaces.

  65. Remove the O-rings from the bottom of the cylinder block and oil pump.
  66.  
  67. Remove the oil pan gaskets.
  68.  
  69. For AWD models, remove the axle pipe from the upper oil pan using a suitable drift, if necessary.
  70.  
  71. Clean the oil strainer, if necessary.
  72.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper oil pan, as follows:
    1. Use a scraper to remove the old liquid gasket from all mating surfaces. Remove old liquid gasket from the mating surface of the cylinder block, and the bolt holes and threads.
      CAUTION
      Do not scratch or damage the mating surfaces when cleaning off old liquid gasket.

    2.  
    3. Apply liquid gasket to the oil pan gaskets as shown.
      NOTE
      Use Genuine RTV Silicone Sealant or equivalent.

    4.  
    5. Install the new gasket. Align the protrusion of the oil pan gasket with the notches of the front timing chain case and rear oil seal retainer.
    6.  
    7. Install the oil pan gasket with the smaller arc to the front timing chain case side.
    8.  
    9. Install new O-rings on the cylinder block and oil pump.
    10.  
    11. Apply a continuous bead of liquid gasket to the cylinder block mating surface of the upper oil pan to a limited portion as shown.
      NOTE
      Use Genuine RTV Silicone Sealant or equivalent.



      For bolt holes with marks (5 locations), apply liquid gasket outside the holes.
       
      Apply a bead of 0.177 - 0.217 in. (4.5 - 5.5mm) in diameter to area A.
       
      Installation should be done within 5 minutes after coating.

    13. Install the upper oil pan. Tighten the mounting bolts in the order shown. There are two types of mounting bolts. Refer to the following for locating the bolt positions:

      M8 x 100 mm (3.97 in): positions 5, 7, 8 & 11
       
      M8 x 25 mm (0.98 in) : positions except 5, 7, 8 & 11

    15. Tighten the transmission joint bolts.
    16.

  3. Install the oil strainer onto the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower oil pan, as follows:
    1. Use a scraper to remove all old liquid gasket from the mating surfaces. Also remove old liquid gasket from the mating surface of the upper oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Apply new liquid gasket.
      NOTE
      Use Genuine RTV Silicone Sealant or equivalent. Attaching should be done within 5 minutes after coating.

    4.  
    5. Tighten the mounting bolts in numerical order as shown.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan drain plug.
  8.  
  9. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
    NOTE
    Wait at least 30 minutes after the oil pan is installed, fill the engine with new oil.

  10.  
  11. Start the engine, and check there is no leak of engine oil.
  12.  
  13. Stop the engine and wait 10 minutes.
  14.  
  15. Check the engine oil level again.
  16.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    WARNING
    To avoid the danger of being scalded, do not drain engine oil or coolant when the engine is hot.

  3. Remove the front tire.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hood assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front and rear engine under covers.
  10.  
  11. Drain the engine oil and engine coolant.
  12.  
  13. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the auto tensioner for the power steering oil pump belt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the power steering oil pump with the piping connected, and temporarily secure it aside with ropes or equivalent.
  18.  
  19. Remove the A/C compressor with the piping connected, and temporarily secure it aside with ropes or equivalent.
  20.  
  21. Remove the A/C compressor fitting bolts, and install the A/C compressor temporarily on the vehicle side with ropes or equivalent.
  22.  
  23. Remove the wiring harness of the lower side of oil pan.
  24.  
  25. Remove the crankshaft position sensor (POS) from the transmission.
    CAUTION
    Handle the POS carefully to avoid dropping it and exposing it to abrupt shocks. Do not disassemble it, do not allow metal powder to adhere to magnetic part at the sensor tip, and do not place sensor in a location where it may be exposed to magnetism.

  27. Install the engine slinger to hold the engine assembly in a secure position. Tighten the slinger mounting bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (33.5 Nm).

  29. Remove the front suspension member.
  30.  
  31. Remove the front final drive assembly.
  32.  
  33. Remove the oil filter.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the oil cooler water hoses, and remove the oil cooler water pipe and oil cooler.
  36.  
  37. Remove the oil pan as follows:
    1. Remove the rear plate cover.
    2.  
    3. Remove the transmission joint bolts which pass through the oil pan.
    4.  
    5. Loosen the oil pan bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence.
      NOTE
      Disregard the tightening sequence numbers No. 11 and No. 17 during removal.

    6.  
    7. Insert seal cutter between the oil pan and cylinder block. Slide the seal cutter by tapping on the side of seal cutter with hammer.
    8.  
    9. Remove the oil pan.
      CAUTION
      Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces. Do not use a flat-bladed screwdriver-this will damage the mating surfaces.

    10.  
    11. Remove the O-rings from the bottom of the oil pump and front cover.
    12.

  39. As necessary, pull the axle pipe from the oil pan. Hold the pipes and pull them out to the left side.
  40.  
  41. Remove the oil strainer.
  42.  
  43. Clean the oil strainer, if necessary.
  44.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil strainer.
  2.  
  3. Install the axle pipe to the oil pan, if removed.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the O-ring groove of the axle pipe, O-ring, and O-ring joint of the oil pan with new engine oil.
    NOTE
    The right and left O-ring diameters differ from each other. The O-ring with an identification paint mark must be installed on the left front halfshaft side.

  6.  
  7. Install the axle pipe to the oil pan on the left side.
    CAUTION
    Insert the axle pipe with care to prevent the O-ring from sliding.

  8.  
  9. Install the oil pan as follows:
    1. Install new O-rings onto the oil pump and the side of the front cover.
    2.  
    3. Apply a continuous bead of RTV liquid gasket to the cylinder block mating surface of the oil pan as shown.
      NOTE
      Use Genuine RTV Silicone Sealant or equivalent.


      CAUTION
      Installation should be done within 5 minutes after coating, otherwise the liquid gasket may not seal properly.

    4.  
    5. Install the oil pan and tighten the mounting bolts in order as shown. There are three types of mounting bolts. Refer to the following for locating bolts.
      NOTE
      Tighten bolts No. 1 and No. 2 in two steps. They are shown as Nos. 1 & 11 and Nos. 2 & 17 in the illustration. Nos. 11 & 17 are the second steps for Nos. 1 & 2.



      M6 x 30mm: positions 18 & 19
       
      M8 x 100mm: positions 5 & 9
       
      M8 x 45mm: positions except 5, 9, 18 & 19
       

    6.  
    7. Tighten the transmission joint bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install the rear plate cover and tighten the mounting bolt to 65 inch lbs. (7.3 Nm).
    10.  

  10.  
  11. Install the oil pan drain plug with a new drain plug washer. Tighten it to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  12.  
  13. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    NOTE
    Wait at least 30 minutes after the oil pan is installed, to fill the engine with new oil.

  14.  
  15. Add engine oil.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine, and check for leakage of engine oil.
  18.  
  19. Stop the engine and wait for 15 minutes.
  20.  
  21. Check the engine oil level again.
  22.
