Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transmission and transfer assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine rear plate.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear oil seal using a suitable tool.
    CAUTION
    Be careful not to damage the crankshaft and oil seal retainer surface.

To install:

  1. Apply engine oil to both the oil seal lip and dust seal lip.
  2.  
  3. Using a suitable drift, press fit the oil seal until the height of the oil seal is level with the mounting surface and so that each seal lip is oriented as shown.
    CAUTION
    Press fit the seal straight and avoid causing burrs or tilting.

  5. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Remove the transmission assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drive plate. Install a ring gear stopper (SST: KV1011770 (J44716) or equivalent) on the crankshaft and remove the mounting bolts in a diagonal order.
    CAUTION
    Do not disassemble the drive plate. Never place the drive plate with the signal plate facing down. When handling the signal plate, take care not to damage or scratch it. Handle the signal plate in a manner that prevents it from becoming magnetized.

  9. Use a seal cutter to cut away the old liquid gasket and remove the rear oil seal retainer.
    CAUTION
    Be careful not to damage the mounting surfaces.


    NOTE
    The rear oil seal and retainer form a single part and are handled as one assembly.

To install:

  1. Remove the old liquid gasket from the mating surface of the cylinder block and oil pan using a scraper.
  2.  
  3. Apply new engine oil to the oil and dust seal lips.
  4.  
  5. Apply liquid gasket to the rear oil seal retainer.
    NOTE
    Use Genuine Thread Sealant or equivalent.


    CAUTION
    Installation should be done within 5 minutes after coating, otherwise the liquid gasket may not seal properly.

  7. Install the rear oil seal retainer onto the cylinder block.
  8.  
  9. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
