Removal & Installation



4.5L Engine

NOTE
Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Serious burns could occur from high-pressure engine coolant escaping from the radiator.

  1. Be sure the engine is cold.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant using the radiator drain plug and the water drain plug at the front of the cylinder block. Properly disposed of used coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front engine cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air duct (inlet).
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the water suction hose from the water inlet.
  12.  
  13. Remove the water inlet and the thermostat.
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the water inlet and thermostat assembly.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Install the thermostat and water control valve with the whole circumference of each flange part fitting securely inside the rubber ring.
  4.  
  5. Install the thermostat with the jiggle valve facing upwards. The position deviation may be within plus/minus 10 degrees.
  6.  
  7. Install the water control valve with the UP mark facing upward and the frame center part facing upward. The position deviation may be within plus/minus 10 degrees.
  8.  
  9. Be sure to refill the cooling using the proper grade and type engine coolant.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and allow it to reach operation temperature. Recheck the coolant level, fill as required.

3.5L Engine

NOTE

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine coolant using the radiator drain plug and the water drain plug at the front of the cylinder block. Properly disposed of used coolant.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air duct (inlet).
  10.  
  11. Remove the water inlet and thermostat housing retaining bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the assembly from the engine.
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the water inlet and thermostat assembly. Replace them as a unit, if required.

  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to refill the cooling using the proper grade and type engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and allow it to reach operation temperature. Recheck the coolant level, fill as required.
