Removal & Installation



4.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Properly release the fuel system pressure.
  8.  
  9. If removing the left cover, remove the air duct, air cleaner case and mass air flow sensor assembly, air duct and resonator assembly. Move the harness on the upper cover aside. Remove the harness brackets from the camshaft bracket (No. 6). Remove the electrical throttle control actuator. Remove the ignition coil. Remove the PCV hose from the PCV valve.

  11. If removing the right side, move the harness on the upper cover aside. Remove the ignition coil. Remove the PCV hose from the PCV valve. Remove the PCV valves and O-rings from the covers, right and left as necessary. Remove the oil filler cap and oil catcher, if necessary.

  13. Remove the grommets from the right and left cowl top panel.
    NOTE
    To remove the right grommet you must remove the battery and the battery tray first.

  15. Loosen the valve cover retaining bolts. Reverse the order shown in the illustration.

  17. Remove the valve cover from the engine.
  18.  
  19. When removing the right cover do not hold it by the filler neck, as damage may result.
    NOTE
    Loosen number 10 bolt of the right cover and number 10 and 12 bolts of the left cover from the cowl top panel.

  21. Remove the valve cover from the engine.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Use a scraper and remove all old gasket material from the cylinder head and camshaft bracket (No. 1 and No. 6).
    NOTE
    Be sure not to scratch the mating surfaces with the scraper when removing the gasket material.

  3. Apply genuine RTV silicone sealant or equivalent to the joints of the valve cover, cylinder head and camshaft bracket (N0. 1 and No. 6) as shown in the illustration.

  5. Refer to figure A in the illustration to apply liquid gasket to the joint part of the camshaft (No. 1 and No. 6) and cylinder head.

  7. Refer to figure B in the illustration to apply liquid gasket to the figure A squarely.
  8.  
  9. Install a new valve cover gasket to the valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the valve cover. Torque the retaining bolts to 18 inch lbs. and then to 73 inch lbs., in the proper sequence as shown in the illustration.
    NOTE
    Be sure that the gasket has not dropped from the grove prior to installation.

  13. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Properly release the fuel system pressure.
  8.  
  9. Properly drain the engine coolant. Be sure the engine is cold before performing this operation.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper and lower intake manifold collectors.
  12.  
  13. Separate the engine harness by removing the brackets from the valve covers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition coil.
  16.  
  17. Remove the PCV hoses from the valve cover. Remove the PCV valve and O-ring from the valve cover, right bank if necessary.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil filler cap and oil catcher from the valve cover, left bank if necessary.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the valve cover retaining bolts. Reverse the order shown in the illustration.

  23. Remove the valve cover from the engine.

To install:

  1. Use a scraper and remove all old gasket material from the cylinder head and camshaft bracket (No. 1).
    NOTE
    Be sure not to scratch the mating surfaces with the scraper when removing the gasket material.

  3. Apply genuine RTV silicone sealant or equivalent to the joints of the valve cover, cylinder head and camshaft bracket (N0. 1) as shown in the illustration.

  5. Refer to figure A in the illustration to apply liquid gasket to the joint part of the camshaft (No. 1) and cylinder head.

  7. Refer to figure B in the illustration to apply liquid gasket to the figure A squarely.
  8.  
  9. Install a new valve cover gasket to the valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the valve cover. Torque the retaining bolts to 17 inch lbs. and then to 74 inch lbs., in the proper sequence as shown in the illustration.
    NOTE
    Be sure that the gasket has not dropped from the grove prior to installation.

  13. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  14.  
  15. When installing the PCV hose, insert it 0.98 - 1.18 inch from the connector end.
  16.  
  17. When installing the PCV hose between the right and left valve covers be sure the identification paint mark is facing upward (right cover side).
