    NOTE
Engine coolant will leak from the cylinder block, so have a receptacle ready under vehicle.

    CAUTION
Handle the water pump vane so that it does not contact any other parts.

  14.
  15. Inspect the water pump after removal for the following:

Significant dirt or rusting on water pump body and vane.

looseness in vane shaft, and that it turns smoothly when rotated by hand.

  16.

If anything is found, replace the water pump.

To install:

  1. Install the water pump.
  2.

CAUTION
During service, be sure to prevent engine coolant from contacting the drive belt.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
Water pump cannot be disassembled and should be replaced as a unit.

  2.
  3. Remove the front engine undercover.
  4.
  5. Remove the drive belts.
  6.
  7. Drain the engine coolant from the radiator.
    WARNING
Make sure the engine is cold before draining the coolant.

  8.
  9. Remove the air duct (inlet), power duct and air cleaner case assembly.
  10.
  11. Remove the cylinder block drain plug (front side) of engine.
  12.
  13. Remove the chain tensioner cover and water pump cover. Use a seal cutter to separate the two mating surfaces.
    CAUTION
Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces.

  14.
  15. Remove the timing chain tensioner (primary), as follows:
    1. Pull the lever down and release the plunger stopper tab.
      NOTE
The plunger stopper tab can be pushed up to release (coaxial structure with lever).

    2.
    3. Insert a stopper pin into the tensioner body hole to hold the lever and keep the plunger stopper tab released.
      NOTE
An Allen wrench can be used for a stopper pin.

    4.
    5. Insert the plunger into the tensioner body by pressing the timing chain slack guide.
    6.
    7. Keep the slack guide depressed and hold the plunger in by pushing the stopper pin deeper through the lever and into the tensioner body hole.
    8.
    9. Turn the crankshaft pulley approximately 20 degrees -clockwise, so that the timing chain on the timing chain tensioner (primary) side is loose.
    10.
    11. Remove the mounting bolts and timing chain tensioner (primary).
      CAUTION
Be careful not to drop mounting bolts inside the chain case.

    12.

  16.
  17. Remove the three water pump fixing bolts. Secure a gap between the water pump gear and timing chain, by turning the crankshaft pulley counterclockwise until timing chain slack on the water pump sprocket is at its maximum.
  18.
  19. Insert M8x1.25 bolts, approx. 50mm long, into the water pump upper and lower mounting bolt holes until they contact the timing chain case. Then, alternately tighten each bolt for a half turn, and pull out water pump.
    CAUTION
Pull the water pump straight out while preventing the vane from contacting the socket in the installation area. Remove the water pump without allowing the sprocket to contact the timing chain.

  20.
  21. Remove the M8 bolts and O-rings from the water pump.
    CAUTION
Do not disassemble the water pump.

  22.
  23. Check for badly rusted or corroded water pump body assembly.
  24.
  25. Check for rough operation due to excessive end play.
  26.
  27. If any defects are found, replace the water pump.
  28.

To install:

  1. Install new O-rings on the water pump.
  2.
  3. Apply engine oil and engine coolant to the water pump O-rings.
  4.
  5. Position the O-ring with the white paint mark toward the engine front side.
  6.
  7. Install the water pump.
    CAUTION
Do not allow the cylinder block to damage the O-rings during installation.

  8.
  9. Make sure the timing chain and water pump sprocket are engaged properly.
  10.
  11. Install the water pump by alternately and evenly tightening the mounting bolts.
  12.
  13. Install the timing chain tensioner (primary), as follows:
    1. Remove all dust and foreign material completely from the backside of the chain tensioner and from the installation area of the rear timing chain case.
    2.
    3. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise so that the timing chain on the timing chain tensioner (primary) side is loose.
    4.
    5. Apply engine oil to the oil hole and tensioner, when installing the timing chain tensioner.
    6.
    7. Install the timing chain tensioner (primary).
    8.
    9. Remove the stopper pin.
    10.

  14.
  15. Install the chain tensioner cover and water pump cover.
    NOTE
Before installing, remove all traces of liquid gasket from the mating surface of the water pump cover and chain tensioner cover using a scraper. Also, remove traces of liquid gasket from the mating surface of the front timing chain case.

  16.
  17. Apply a continuous bead of liquid gasket 0.091 - 0.130 in. (2.3 - 3.3mm) thick to the mating surface of the chain tensioner cover and water pump cover.
    NOTE
Use RTV Silicone Sealant or equivalent.

  18.
  19. Install the cylinder block drain plug (front side).
  20.
  21. Apply thread sealant to the thread of cylinder block drain plug.
    NOTE
Use Genuine Thread Sealant or equivalent.

  22.
  23. Install the air duct (inlet), power duct and air cleaner case assembly.
  24.
  25. Fill the engine with coolant.
  26.
  27. Install the drive belts.
  28.
  29. Install the front engine undercover.
  30.
  31. Check for engine coolant leaks using radiator cap tester.
  32.
  33. Start the engine and let it idle for three minutes, then raise the engine RPM up to 3,000 rpm under no load to purge air from the high-pressure chamber of the chain tensioner. The engine may produce a rattling noise, which indicates that air remains in the chamber and is not a matter of concern.
  34.
  35. With the engine idling, visually make sure that there are no leaks of engine coolant or A/T fluid.
