Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the wheels from vehicle.
  6.
  7. Remove the undercover.
  8.
  9. Remove the front cross bar.
  10.
  11. Remove the cotter pin at the transverse link, then loosen the mounting nut.
  12.
  13. Use a ball joint remover to remove the transverse link from the steering knuckle. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot.
    CAUTION
Temporarily tighten the mounting nut to prevent damage to the threads and to prevent the ball joint remover from coming off.

  14.
  15. Remove the mounting bolts which are at the back of the transverse link (mounting part with body), then separate the transverse link.
  16.
  17. Remove the mounting bolts which are at the front of the transverse link (mounting part with the front suspension member), then separate the transverse link.
  18.
  19. Remove the transverse link from the vehicle.
  20.
  21. Check transverse link and bushing for deformation, cracks, or damage. If any non-standard condition is found, replace it.
  22.
  23. Check the boot of the ball joint for cracks, or other damage, and also for grease leakage. If any non-standard condition is found, replace it.
  24.
  25. Manually move ball stud to confirm it moves smoothly with no binding.
    NOTE
Before measurement, move ball joint at least ten times by hand to check for smooth movement.

  26.
  27. Hook a spring scale onto the ball stud tip. Confirm that the spring scale measurement value is within specifications when the ball stud begins to move. If it is outside the specified range, replace the transverse link assembly.
    NOTE
Swing torque specification: Less than 5 - 43 inch. lbs. (0.5 - 4.9 Nm), measure value of spring scale: less than 5 - 43 inch. lbs. (0.5 - 4.9 Nm).

  28.
  29. Attach the mounting nut onto the ball stud. Check that the rotating torque is within specifications with a preload gauge . If it is outside the specified range, replace transverse link assembly.
    NOTE
    Rotating torque specification: Less than 5 - 43 inch lbs. (0.5 - 4.9 Nm).

  30.
  31. Move the tip of ball joint in axial direction to check for looseness. If it is outside the specified range, replace transverse link assembly.
    NOTE
Axial end play specification: 0.004 in. (0.1mm).

  32.

To install:

  1. Install the transverse link on the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Install and tighten the mounting bolts at the front of the transverse link (mounting part with the front suspension member) to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm), then install and tighten the mounting bolts which are at the back of the transverse link (mounting part with body) to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  4.
  5. Reattach the transverse link to the steering knuckle, and tighten the ball joint nut to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm). Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot.
  6.
  7. Install a new cotter pin.
  8.
  9. Install the front cross bar. Tighten the inner two bolts on each end to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) and the outer two bolts on each end to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  10.
  11. Install the undercover.
  12.
  13. Install the tire.
  14.
  15. Check the wheel alignment.
  16.
  17. After adjusting wheel alignment, adjust the neutral position of the steering angle sensor.
