  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
Make sure the piston rod on the strut is not damaged when removing the components from the strut assembly.

  2.
  3. Install the strut attachment SST: ST35652000 or equivalent to the strut and secure it in a vise.
    CAUTION
When installing the strut attachment to the strut, wrap a shop towel around the strut to protect it from damage.

  4.
  5. Using a spring compressor, compress the coil spring between the spring upper seat and spring lower seat (on the strut) until the coil spring is free.
    CAUTION
Be sure the spring compressor is securely attached to the coil spring before compressing the spring.

  6.
  7. After making sure the coil spring is free between the spring upper seat and spring lower seat of the strut, remove the piston rod locknut.
  8.
  9. Remove the mounting insulator, mounting insulator bracket, mounting bearing, spring upper seat, spring upper rubber seat, and bound bumper. Then, remove the coil spring and spring lower rubber seat from the strut.
  10.
  11. Gradually release the spring compressor, and remove the coil spring.
    CAUTION
Loosen the spring compressor while making sure the coil spring attachment position does not move.

  12.
  13. Remove the strut attachment from the strut.
  14.
  15. Check the strut for deformation, cracks, damage, and replace if necessary.
  16.
  17. Check the piston rod for damage, uneven wear or distortion, and replace if necessary.
  18.
  19. Check the welded and sealed areas for oil leakage, and replace if necessary.
  20.
  21. Check the mounting insulator for cracks and rubber parts for wear. Replace them if necessary.
  22.
  23. Check the coil spring for cracks, wear or damage, and replace if necessary.
  24.

Assembly
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
Make sure the piston rod on the strut is not damaged when attaching the components to the strut.

  2.
  3. Install the strut attachment to the strut and fix it in a vise.
    CAUTION
When installing strut attachment to strut, wrap a shop cloth around strut to protect it from damage.

  4.
  5. Compress coil spring using a spring compressor (commercial service tool), and install it onto the strut.
    CAUTION
Face the tube side of the coil spring downward. Align the lower end to the spring rubber seat as shown. Be sure the spring compressor is securely attached to coil spring before compressing the coil spring.

  6.
  7. Apply soapy water to the bound bumper and insert into the mounting insulator.
    CAUTION
    Do not use machine oil.

  8.
  9. Install the mounting insulator bracket, mounting bearing, bound bumper, spring upper seat, spring upper rubber seat and spring lower rubber seat.
    NOTE
The installation position of spring upper seat is as shown.

  10.
  11. Fix the mounting insulator, then tighten the piston rod locknut to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
    CAUTION
Be sure not to deform the mounting insulator bracket.

  12.
  13. Gradually the release spring compressor, and remove the coil spring.
    CAUTION
Loosen the spring compressor while making sure coil spring attachment position does not move.

  14.
  15. Remove the strut attachment from the strut.
  16.

Fig. MacPherson strut projection positioning

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the wheels from the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Remove the brake hose lockplate. Then, remove the brake hose from the strut assembly.
  8.
  9. Remove the wheel sensor wiring harness from the strut assembly.
    CAUTION
Do not pull the wheel sensor wiring harness.

  10.
  11. Remove the stabilizer connecting rod upper nut, separate the stabilizer connecting rod and strut assembly.
  12.
  13. Remove the attaching bolts and nuts between the strut assembly and the steering knuckle.
  14.
  15. Remove the mounting nuts on the mounting insulator bracket, then remove the strut upper plate, strut spacer and the strut from the vehicle.
  16.

To install:

CAUTION
Attach strut upper plate as shown in the accompanying illustration.

  1. Install the strut upper plate, strut spacer and the strut onto the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Install and tighten the mounting nuts on the mounting insulator bracket to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install and tighten the attaching bolts and nuts between the strut assembly and the steering knuckle to 134 ft. lbs. (182 Nm).
  6.
  7. Reattach the stabilizer connecting rod to the strut and tighten the upper nut to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the wheel sensor wiring harness onto the strut assembly.
  10.
  11. Install the brake hose and the hose lockplate.
  12.
  13. Install the tire from the vehicle.
    NOTE
Refer to component parts location and do not reuse non-reusable parts.

  14.
  15. After installation, check wheel alignment.
  16.
  17. After adjusting the wheel alignment, adjust the neutral position of steering angle sensor.
  18.
  19. Double-check to ensure that the wheel sensor wiring harness is properly routed.
