  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the appropriate wheel.
  6.
  7. Remove the brake caliper. Support it in a place where it will not interfere with work.
    NOTE
Avoid depressing brake pedal while brake caliper is removed.

  8.
  9. Remove the disc rotor.
  10.
  11. Remove the wheel sensor from the wheel hub and bearing assembly.
    CAUTION
Do not pull on wheel sensor wiring harness.

  12.
  13. Remove the cotter pin from the steering outer socket, then loosen the mounting nut.
  14.
  15. Use a ball joint remover to separate the steering outer socket from the steering knuckle. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot.
    CAUTION
Temporarily tighten the mounting nut to prevent damage to the threads and to prevent the ball joint remover from coming off.

  16.
  17. Remove the cotter pin at the transverse link, then loosen the mounting nut.
  18.
  19. Use a ball joint remover to separate the transverse link from the steering knuckle. Be careful not to damage ball joint boot.
    CAUTION
Temporarily tighten the mounting nut to prevent damage to the threads and to prevent the ball joint remover from coming off.

  20.
  21. On AWD models, perform the following:
    1. Remove the cotter pin, then remove the lock nut from the halfshaft.
    2.
    3. Remove the steering knuckle from the halfshaft.
      CAUTION
When removing steering knuckle, do not apply an excessive angle to the halfshaft joint. Also be careful not to excessively extend the slide joint. Do not hang over the halfshaft without proper support.

    4.

  22.
  23. Remove the mounting bolts and nuts between the strut assembly and the steering knuckle.
  24.
  25. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.
  26.
  27. Remove the mounting bolts between the steering knuckle and the wheel hub/bearing assembly.
  28.
  29. Remove the splash guard and wheel hub/bearing assembly from the steering knuckle.
  30.
  31. Check for deformities, cracks and damage on all parts and replace if necessary.
  32.
  33. Inspect the ball joint for boot breakage, axial looseness, and torque of transverse link and steering outer socket ball joint. Maximum of allowable axial end play is 0.002 in. (0.05mm) or less.
  34.

To install:

  1. Install the splash guard and wheel hub/bearing assembly onto the steering knuckle.
  2.
  3. Install the mounting bolts between the steering knuckle and the wheel hub/bearing assembly. Tighten the bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the steering knuckle on the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Install the mounting bolts and nuts to the strut assembly and the steering knuckle. Tighten the bolts to 134 ft. lbs. (182 Nm).
  8.
  9. On AWD models, perform the following:
    1. Install the steering knuckle onto the halfshaft.
    2.
    3. Install and tighten the lock nut on the halfshaft to 203 ft. lbs. (275 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
    4.

  10.
  11. Reattach the transverse link to the steering knuckle. Tighten the ball joint nut to 105 ft. lbs. (143 Nm).
  12.
  13. Install a new cotter pin.
  14.
  15. Reconnect the steering outer socket to the steering knuckle. Tighten the ball joint nut to 63 ft. lbs. (86 Nm).
  16.
  17. Install a new cotter pin.
  18.
  19. Install the wheel sensor onto the wheel hub and bearing assembly.
  20.
  21. Install the disc rotor.
  22.
  23. Install the brake caliper.
  24.
  25. Install the wheel.
  26.
  27. Check wheel alignment.
  28.
