Inspection

Visual Inspection
  1. Check the suspension arm and bushing for deformation, cracks, or damage. If any non-standard condition is found, replace it.
  2.
  3. Check the boot of the ball joint for cracks, or damage, and also for grease leakage.
  4.

Ball Joint Inspection

Manually move the ball stud to confirm it moves smoothly with no binding.

Swing Torque Inspection

NOTE
Before measuring, move the ball joint at least ten times by hand to check for smooth movement.

  1. Hook a spring scale at the cotter pin mounting hole. Confirm that the measurement value is within specifications when the ball stud begins moving. Swing torque: 0.5 - 3.4 Nm (5 - 30 inch lbs.). Measured value of spring scale: 9.7 - 66.0 N (2.18 - 14.8 lbs.).
  2.
  3. If it is outside the specified range, replace suspension arm assembly.

  4.

Rotating Torque Inspection
  1. Attach mounting nut to ball stud. Make sure rotating torque is within the specifications with a preload gauge (SST). Rotating torque: 0.5 - 3.4 Nm (5 - 30 inch lbs.).
  2.
  3. If it is outside the specified range, replace suspension arm assembly.
  4.

Axial End Play Inspection
  1. Move tip of ball joint in axial direction to check for looseness. Axial end play: 0 mm (0 in.).
  2.
  3. If it is outside the specified range, replace suspension arm assembly.
  4.

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.
  7. Remove the stabilizer connecting rod mounting bracket from the suspension arm.
  8.
  9. Remove the driveshaft from vehicle (VK45DE models).
  10.
  11. Remove the cotter pin from the suspension arm ball joint, and loosen the nut.
  12.
  13. Use a ball joint remover to remove the suspension arm from the axle assembly. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot.
    WARNING
Temporarily tighten the mounting nut to prevent damage to the threads and to prevent the ball joint remover from coming off.

  14.
  15. Remove the fixing nuts and bolts between the suspension arm and rear suspension member.
  16.
  17. Remove the suspension arm from the vehicle.
  18.

To install:

  1. Refer to the rear suspension exploded view for tightening torques. Installation is the reverse of removal.
    NOTE
Refer to exploded view and do not reuse non-reusable parts.

  2.
  3. Perform final tightening of rear suspension member installation position (rubber bushing) under unladen conditions with tires on level ground. Check wheel alignment.
  4.
  5. After adjusting wheel alignment, adjust neutral position of steering angle sensor.
  6.
