Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the air duct and resonator assembly.
  4.
  5. Install special tool J-46535, or equivalent on the auto tensioner pulley bolt and move it upward.
    NOTE
Avoid placing your hand in a location where pinching may occur if the holding tool accidentally comes off.

  6.
  7. Remove the drive belt from the vehicle.
  8.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.
  3. Be sure that the belt is securely installed around all pulleys.
  4.
  5. Rotate the crankshaft several times clockwise to equalize belt tension between the pulleys.
  6.
  7. Make sure that the belt tension is within the allowable working range, using the indicator notch on the auto tensioner.
