Removal & Installation



2.2L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Alternator harness connectors
     
    Alternator brackets
     
    Alternator

To install:

Install or connect the following:



Alternator and brackets. Tighten the long bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) and the short bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
 
Alternator harness connectors
 
Accessory drive belt
 
Negative battery cable
 

3.2L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Alternator harness connectors
     
    Alternator

To install:

Install or connect the following:



Alternator. Tighten the 10mm bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm) and the 8mm bolt to 15 ft. lbs. 21 Nm).
 
Alternator harness connectors
 
Accessory drive belt
 
Negative battery cable
 

Testing



2.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect battery.
  2.  
  3. Close off connecting cable from alternator terminal "B+".
  4.  
  5. Set ammeter (measuring range 100A) in disconnected line.
  6.  
  7. Connect controllable load resistor to battery terminal.
  8.  
  9. Set resistor in front of connection to "0"; connect first to battery, then to resistor.
  10.  
  11. Connect tachometer.
  12.  
  13. Connect oscilloscope according to manufacturer's instructions.
  14.  
  15. Connect battery.
  16.  
  17. Start engine and read off resulting current at various engine speeds

  19. Adjust load resistor, if the required load currents are not attained.
  20.  
  21. The shape of the voltage curves on oscilloscope curve should be regular.
  22.  
  23. Test value: 5 to 7A.
  24.  
  25. If the required minimum current intensity is not attained, or if the oscilloscope picture shows variations, the alternator should be overhauled

3.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect the wiring connector from generator.
  2.  
  3. With the engine OFF , turn ignition switch ON and connect a voltmeter between connector terminal L (1) and ground or between terminal IG (2) and ground.

  5. If voltage is not present, the line between battery and connector is disconnected and so requires repair.
  6.  
  7. Reconnect the wiring connector to the generator, run the engine at middle speed, and turn off all electrical devices other than engine.
  8.  
  9. Measure battery voltage. If it exceeds 16V, repair or replace the generator.
  10.  
  11. Connect an ammeter to output terminal of generator, and measure output current under load by turning on the other electrical devices (ex. headlights). At this time the amperes must not be less than 15A and the voltage must not be less than 13V.
