Lower Ball Joint


Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  3. Support the lower control arm with a jackstand.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
    Disc brake caliper and support
    Brake rotor and backing plate
    Wheel speed sensor
    Outer tie rod end
    Upper ball joint
    Steering knuckle
    Lower ball joint


To install:

Use new nuts, bolts and split pins for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower ball joint. Tighten the mounting bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm) on 1999-01 models; 85 ft. lbs. (116 Nm) on 2002 models.
    Steering knuckle. Tighten the lower ball joint nut to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
    Upper ball joint. Tighten the nut to 72 ft. lbs. (96 Nm).
    Outer tie rod end. Tighten the nut to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm).
    Wheel speed sensor
    Brake rotor and backing plate
    Disc brake caliper and support. Tighten the support bolts to 115 ft. lbs. (155 Nm).
    Front wheel

  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
