4.2L Engine



  1. Recover the refrigerant.
  2.  
  3. Remove the generator.
  4.  
  5. Remove the idler pulley.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the compressor electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Remove the compressor hose assembly bolt from the compressor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the compressor mounting bolts from the compressor (1).
  12.  
  13. Remove the compressor .

  15. Drain and measure the compressor oil.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Add the proper amount of oil to the replacement compressor.
  2.  
  3. Install the compressor.
  4.  
  5. Install the compressor mounting bolts to the compressor (1).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the compressor hose assembly block to the compressor.

  11. Tighten the bolt to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the compressor electrical connectors.
  14.  
  15. Install the idler pulley.
  16.  
  17. Install the generator.
  18.  
  19. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system.
  20.  
  21. Leak test the fittings of the components using a halogen leak detector.
  22.  

5.3L Engine



  1. Recover the refrigerant.
  2.  
  3. Remove the washer solvent container.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner resonator outlet duct.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cooling fan and shroud.
  8.  
  9. Remove the accessory drive belt from the A/C compressor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the compressor hose assembly nut from the compressor.

  13. Remove the compressor hose assembly from the compressor.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower coolant hose.
  18.  
  19. Raise and support the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts (3).
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Reposition the compressor and mounting bracket to access the remaining compressor to bracket bolts.
  28.  
  29. Remove the upper A/C compressor mounting bolts (4).
  30.  
  31. Remove the A/C compressor.
  32.  
  33. Remove the A/C compressor bracket.

To install:

  1. Add the proper amount of polyalkylene glycol (PAG) oil to the compressor crankcase.
  2.  
  3. Position the A/C compressor mounting bracket partially into the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Position the A/C compressor partially into the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper compressor mounting bolts into the compressor mounting bracket.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the upper rear bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the upper compressor mounting bolts (4) into the compressor and bracket assembly.
  12.  
  13. Position the compressor and bracket assembly into the correct location on the engine.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the upper compressor mounting bolts (4).
  16.  
  17. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Raise the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Install the lower compressor mounting bolts (3).
  22.  
  23. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

  25. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  26.  
  27. Install the lower coolant hose.
  28.  
  29. Lower the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Install the compressor hose assembly to the compressor.
  32.  
  33. Install the compressor hose assembly nut to the compressor.
  34.  
  35. Tighten the nut to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Install the accessory drive belt.
  38.  
  39. Install the cooling fan and shroud.
  40.  
  41. Install the air cleaner resonator outlet duct.
  42.  
  43. Install the washer solvent container.
  44.  
  45. Fill the cooling system.
  46.  
  47. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system.
  48.  
  49. Leak test the fittings of the components using a halogen leak detector.
  50.
