Axle Shaft, Bearing & Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear wheel speed sensor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear axle housing cover and the gasket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the pinion shaft locking bolt.

  13. On axles without a locking differential, remove the pinion shaft.

  15. On axles with a locking differential, remove the shaft part way. Rotate the case until the pinion shaft touches the housing.
  16.  
  17. On axles with a locking differential, use a screwdriver, or a similar tool, in order to enter the differential case and rotate the C-lock (1) until the C-lock aligns with the thrust block (2).
  18.  
  19. Push the flange of the axle shaft (1) toward the differential.

  21. Remove the C-lock from the button end of the axle shaft.
    NOTE
    When removing the axle shaft, do not rotate the shaft. Rotating the shaft will misalign the gears. Misaligning the gears will make the installing of the axle shaft difficult.

  23. Remove the axle shaft from the housing.

  25. Remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing from the axle housing using approved tools.

To install:

  1. Install the axle shaft bearing.
  2.  
  3. Drive the axle shaft bearing into the axle housing until the tool bottoms against the tube.
  4.  
  5. Install the axle shaft seal.
  6.  
  7. Drive the tool into the bore until the axle shaft seal bottoms flush with the tube.

  9. Install the axle shaft into the rear housing.
  10.  
  11. Slide the axle shaft into place allowing the splines to engage the differential side gear.
  12.  
  13. On axles without a locking differential, place the C-lock on the button end of the axle shaft.

  15. On axles with a locking differential, keep the pinion shaft partially withdrawn.

  17. On axles with a locking differential, place the C-lock (1) on the axle shaft (3) so that the ends are flush with the thrust block (2).

  19. Pull the shaft flange outward in order to seat the C-lock in the differential gear.

  21. Align the hole in the pinion shaft with the bolt hole in the differential case.

  23. Install the new pinion shaft locking bolt.
    NOTE
    For the 8.0/8.6 inch axle, tighten the pinion shaft locking bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm). For the 9.5 LD inch axle, tighten the pinion shaft locking bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

  25. Install the rear axle housing cover and the gasket.

  27. Install the brake caliper.
  28.  
  29. Install the rear wheel speed sensor.
  30.  
  31. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  32.  
  33. Fill the rear axle with 75W-90 synthetic axle lubricant.
    NOTE
    Rear drive axle 9.5 in LD call for limited-slip additive.

  35. Lower the vehicle.
