Ignition Lock Cylinder

Removal & Installation



  1. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and wait AT LEAST 5 minutes before proceeding.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the yellow 2-way SRS connector located under the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the inflator module mounting bolt from behind the steering wheel assembly using a TORX® driver or equivalent until the inflator module can be released from steering assembly
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the horn lead.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering wheel mounting nut.
  14.  
  15. Make a matchmark (1) across the steering wheel and shaft so parts can be reassembled in their original position, then remove steering wheel.

  17. Make sure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position, then use steering wheel remover J-29752 to remove the steering wheel.
    WARNING
    Never apply force to the steering wheel shaft using a hammer or other impact tools in an attempt to remove the steering wheel. The steering shaft is designed as an energy absorbing unit.

  19. Remove the steering column cover.
  20.  
  21. Detach the wiring harness connectors located under the steering column.
  22.  
  23. Remove the combination switch assembly with SRS coil.
  24.  
  25. Remove snap ring.
  26.  
  27. Remove the rubber cushion.
  28.  
  29. Remove shift lock cable (for A/T).
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the starter switch harness connector located under the steering column then remove lock cylinder assembly.

To install:

  1. Install lock cylinder assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install shift lock cable (for A/T).
  4.  
  5. Install the rubber cushion.
  6.  
  7. Install the snap ring.
  8.  
  9. Install combination switch and SRS coil assembly. After installation of combination switch assembly, connect the combination switch wiring harness connector and the SRS 2-way connector located under the steering column. Then turn the SRS coil counter clockwise to full, return about 3 turns and align the neutral mark.
    WARNING
    Turn the SRS coil counter clockwise until some resistance is felt, or damage may occur to the SRS coil.

  11. Install the steering column cover. When installing the steering column cover, be sure to route each wire harness as illustrated so that the harnesses do not catch on any moving parts.

  13. Install steering wheel by aligning the matchmarks made when removing.
    WARNING
    Never apply force to the steering wheel shaft using a hammer or other impact tools in an attempt to remove the steering wheel. The steering shaft is designed as an energy absorbing unit.

  15. Tighten the steering wheel mounting nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Connect the horn lead.
  18.  
  19. Support the module and carefully connect the SRS connector.
    NOTE
    Pass the lead wire through the tabs on the plastic cover (wire protector) of inflator to prevent lead wire from being pinches.

  21. Install the module mounting bolts and tighten them to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
  22.  
  23. Connect the yellow 2-way SRS connector located under the steering column.
  24.  
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.
  26.  
  27. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and observe the warning lamp.
