Throttle Cable
RWD I-Mark and Impulse
  1. Check that the throttle valve is held closed completely.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the setting of the adjustment nut as necessary so that the clearance between the inner cable stopper and the end of the rubber boot on the outer cable is adjusted to 0.032 and 190.059 in. (0.8 and 191.5mm) the specification for the diesel models is 0 and 190.04 in. (0 and 191mm).
  4.  
  5. Open the throttle valve fully and check that the inner cable stroke is within the range of 1.30 and 191.36 in. (33 and 1934mm).

Trucks with Gasoline Engines
1981 and 1987
  1. Loosen the throttle valve control cable adjusting nuts.
  2.  
  3. Check that the carburetor throttle adjusting screw is in contact with the stopper for normal idling.
  4.  


NOTE
If the adjusting screw is not resting on the stopper, the fast idle mechanism is working and setting of the adjusting screw should be adjusted to obtain normal idling.

  1. To obtain normal idling, perform the following procedures:
  2.  
    1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the air cleaner cover.
    4.  
    5. Fully depress the accelerator pedal to place the choke in the wide open position and release the pedal; do not depress the pedal again.
    6.  
    7. Check the throttle adjusting screw is in contact with the stopper.
    8.  
    9. Install the air cleaner.
    10.  
    11. Connect the battery cable.
    12.  

  3. Remove the rubber boot from the outer cable and turn the adjusting nuts to adjust the outer cable setting to 0.032 and 190.059 in. (0.8 and 191.5mm) and tighten the adjusting nuts; the setting is the distance between the outer cable end and the inner cable stopper.
  4.  
  5. After adjusting, check that the inner cable stroke, from the closed position of the throttle valve to the wide open position is 1.30 and 191.36 in. (32.9 and 1933.9mm).
  6.  
  7. Install the rubber boot onto the outer cable.
  8.

1988 and 1990
  1. Depress the accelerator pedal all the way and check that the throttle valve opens fully.
  2.  


NOTE
If the valve does not open fully, adjust the accelerator link.

  1. Fully depress the accelerator.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the adjustment nuts.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the cable housing so the distance between the end of the boot and stopper on the cable is the 0.03 and 190.06 in. (0.8 and 191.5mm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the adjusting nuts.
  8.  
  9. Recheck the adjustment.

Trucks with Diesel Engine
  1. Loosen the throttle valve control cable adjusting nuts.
  2.  
  3. Fully depress the accelerator pedal to place the injection pump lever in contact with the maximum speed adjusting screw and hold the lever in that position.
  4.  


NOTE
If the injection pump lever is not in contact with the adjusting screw, adjust the accelerator linkage.

  1. Turn the outer cable adjusting nuts to adjust the outer cable setting to 0.032 and 190.059 in. (0.8 and 191.5mm) and tighten the adjusting nuts; the setting is the distance between the upper face of the rubber boot, on the end of the outer cable, and the inner cable stopper.
  2.  
  3. After adjusting, check that the inner cable stroke, from the normal idling position the maximum speed position is 1.30 and 191.36 in. (32.9 and 1933.9mm).
  4.  


NOTE
Normal idling position can not be obtained with the air conditioner operating and the engine coolant temperature higher than 59and#x00B0;F (15and#x00B0;C).

SHIFT CONTROL CABLE
I-Mark (RWD) and Impulse
  1. Remove the adjustment nut fastening the control lever and select lever link.
  2.  
  3. Move the manual valve lever forward to stop, then return to position of Neutral (third stop). With the transmission in Neutral, check to make sure the outside manual valve shift lever is in the vertical position.
  4.  
  5. Hold the manual shaft in that position and place the shift lever in the Neutral position.
  6.  
  7. To remove the play, tighten the adjusting nuts with the lower lever (control shaft lever) on the shift lever pushed rearward together with the shift control lever and tighten the adjust nut.
  8.  
  9. Check that the control lever moves smoothly and that position indicator works correctly.
  10.  

Trooper, P'up and Amigo
1981 and 1987
  1. Loosen the control rod locknuts so the trunnion will slide on the control rod.
  2.  
  3. Turn the manual shaft on the transmission fully clockwise, viewed from the left side of the transmission, then, back it off to the 3rd stop and set it in the N position.
  4.  
  5. While holding the shaft in this position, move the shift lever to the N position.
  6.  
  7. Push the shift, with the shift control lower lever rearward to remove play and tighten the adjusting nuts.
  8.  
  9. Road test the vehicle and check for proper operation of the transmission in all ranges.
  10.

1988 and 1990
  1. Loosen the shift linkage adjusting nut.
  2.  
  3. Push the shift lever fully rearward.
  4.  
  5. Return the shift lever 2 notches to the N position.
  6.  
  7. While holding the selector lever lightly toward the R range side, tighten the shift linkage nut.
  8.
