  4.
  5. Remove the alternator assembly.
  6.
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and pulley. Remove the crankshaft damper with a Harmonic Balancer puller, if so equipped.
  8.
  9. Remove the timing cover. Be sure the mark on the cam pulley is aligned with the upper surface of the cylinder head and the camshaft dowel pin is positioned at the top.
  10.

To install:

4ZC1-T, 4ZD1 and 4ZE1 Engine

NOTE
The engine may be set up with the No. 4 cylinder at TDC on its compression stroke, at the start of this procedure.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the coolant into a suitable drain pan.
  2.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Disconnect the radiator inlet and outlet hoses and remove the radiator.
  2.
  3. Remove alternator and the air conditioning drive belts. Remove the engine fan.
  4.
  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley center bolt and remove the pulley and hub assembly.
  6.
  7. Remove the air pump belt and move the air pump out of the way. Remove the air conditioning compressor and lay it to one side (if equipped with air conditioning). Remove the compressor mounting bracket.
  8.
  9. Remove the distributor (if it is necessary).
  10.
  11. Remove the water pump pulley. Remove the top section of the front cover and the water pump.
  12.
  13. Remove the lower section of the front cover.
  14.

To install:

  1. Install the lower section of the front cover.
  2.
  3. Install the upper cover and water pump pulley.
  4.
  5. Install the distributor (if it was removed).
  6.
  7. Install the air pump and belt. Install the air conditioning compressor and mounting bracket.
  8.
  9. Install the crankshaft pulley and center bolt.
  10.
  11. Install the alternator and the air conditioning drive belts and engine fan.
  12.
  13. Install and connect the radiator.
  14.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable and refill the coolant. Check for leaks.
  16.
