Rear Driveshaft and U-Joint

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
RWD I-Mark and Impulse
  1. Raise the rear of the car and support it safely on jack stands at the rear jack brackets.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the parking brake return spring from the rod.
  4.  
  5. Mark the mating parts of the U-joint and the drive pinion extension shaft flange.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts and nuts connecting the U-joint and the extension shaft flange.
  8.  
  9. Work the propeller shaft slightly forward, lower the rear end of the shaft and slide the assembly rearward. Remove the thrust spring from the front of the shaft.
  10.  
  11. Install a plug (or wrap a small plastic bag) on the transmission extension housing to prevent the loss of oil.
  12.  


CAUTION
When replacing any fasteners or attaching bolts, be sure to use the proper grade bolt. Substitution of lesser quality hardware could cause failure and serious damage.

To install:

  1. Make sure that the transmission rear seal is not damaged. Align all marks and torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  3. Connect the parking brake return spring.

2-WHEEL DRIVE DRIVESHAFT
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the driveshaft to the yokes.
  4.  
  5. Remove the driveshaft retaining bolts and remove the driveshaft.
  6.  
  7. To install, align the driveshaft to the matchmarked position and tighten the retaining bolts.
  8.

4-WHEEL DRIVE REAR DRIVESHAFT
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the driveshaft flange-to-differential pinion flange.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with a 1-piece driveshaft, remove the driveshaft flange-to-pinion nuts, lower the driveshaft and pull it from the transmission.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with a 2-piece driveshaft, perform the following procedures:
  8.  
    1. Remove the rear driveshaft flange-to-pinion nuts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the rear driveshaft flange-to-front driveshaft flange bolts and the rear driveshaft.
    4.  
    5. Remove the center bearing-to-chassis bolts, move the front driveshaft rearward and from the transmission.
    6.  


To install:

  1. If equipped with a 2-piece driveshaft, perform the following procedures:
  2.  
    1. Install the front driveshaft into the transmission and the center bearing-to-chassis bolts.
    2.  
    3. Install the rear driveshaft and the rear driveshaft flange-to-front driveshaft flange bolts.
    4.  
    5. Install the rear driveshaft flange-to-pinion nuts.
    6.  

  3. If equipped with a 1-piece driveshaft, install the driveshaft into the transmission and the driveshaft flange-to-pinion nuts.
