ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
Amigo, P'up, Trooper II, Rodeo With 4ZD1 and 4ZE1 Engines Only
  1. Remove the distributor cap.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the ignition coil high tension cable at the distributor side. Move the high tension cable end to the coil fixing screw and maintain a 5mm clearance.
  4.
  5. Place the ignition switch to the ON position.
  6.
  7. Connect a 1.5 volt dry cell to the red igniter wiring terminal at the positive (+) side and the white wiring terminal at the negative (-) side.
  8.

NOTE
Do not apply voltage to the igniter for more than three seconds at a time to avoid destroying the power transistor in the igniter.

  1. The igniter is normal when sparks are generated between the high tension cable and ground when one connected wiring (or probe) is disconnected.
  2.
  3. If the igniter fails this test (no sparks), replace it.
  4.
  5. Reconnect all disconnected wiring and install all removed parts.
  6.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
G180Z, G200Z Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the distributor cap, seal and rotor.
  4.
  5. Remove the igniter cover and igniter assembly.
  6.

To install:

  1. Install the igniter and adjust the gap between the pick-up coil and coil projections with a feeler gauge. The measurement should be between 0.008 and 190.016 in. (0.2 and 190.4mm).
  2.
  3. Install the igniter cover, rotor, seal and cap.
  4.
  5. Connect the battery cable and check operation.

4ZD1 and 4ZE1 Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the distributor cap, rotor and seal.
  4.
  5. Remove the vacuum control screw and vacuum advance canister.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the wiring harness.
  8.
  9. Remove the retractor (pole piece). Pry loose the retractor outer cover, insert a suitable prybar into the lower side of the retractor and pull free.
  10.
  11. Remove the igniter and breaker plate assembly. Remove the stator, magnet and igniter.
  12.

To install:

  1. Install the igniter, stator and magnet.
  2.
  3. Carefully align the scribe marks on the breaker plate assembly and the housing.
  4.
  5. Install the retractor with the roll pin notch and retractor notch in parallel alignment.
  6.
  7. Install the harness connector, vacuum advance, distributor cap, seal and rotor.
  8.
  9. Check the vacuum canister by applying vacuum to the vacuum port. The breaker plate should move freely and hold vacuum.

  8.
  9. Install the igniter and tighten the retaining screws.
  10.
  11. When installing the ignition coil, remove any sealing and packing adhering to the ignition coil and the housing. Apply silicone gasket compound to the area where the coil seats on the body of the distributor housing.
  12.
  13. Route the coil wiring harness and position the coil against the distributor housing.
  14.
  15. Install the coil retaining screws.
