Knuckle and Spindle

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
RWD I-Mark and Impulse
  1. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower shock bolt and push the shock upward.
  4.  
  5. Remove the disc brake caliper and support it out of the way with wire.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tie rod end nut, cotter pin and assembly with the use of a tie rod removing tool J-21687-02 or equivalent. Refer to the tie rod procedures in this Section.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front hub and rotor assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the dust cover.
  12.  
  13. Place a hydraulic jack under the outer edge of the control arm and raise until level.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the upper and lower ball joint nuts until the top of the nut is flush with the top of the ball stud. Disconnect the ball joints from the steering knuckle using ball joint separator tool J-26407.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle and connect the upper and lower ball joints to the knuckle. Install the nuts and torque to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm). Align the cotter pin hole and install a new cotter pin.
  2.  
  3. Install the dust cover.
  4.  
  5. Install the front hub and rotor assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the tie rod end, nut and cotter pin. Torque the nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
  8.  
  9. Install the disc brake caliper.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower shock bolt.
  12.  
  13. Install the front wheel and lower the vehicle.
  14.  

FWD I-Mark, Impulse and Stylus
  1. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands. Remove the front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake caliper and support with a piece of wire.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rotor and hub nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tie rod end using a tie rod remover J2168702.
  8.  
  9. Remove the pinch bolt and disconnect the lower ball joint.
  10.  
  11. Remove the strut-to-knuckle bolts and knuckle.

To install:

  1. Install the knuckle and the strut-to-knuckle bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install the pinch bolt and connect the lower ball joint.
  4.  
  5. Install the tie rod end using a tie rod remover J2168702.
  6.  
  7. Install the rotor and hub nut.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake caliper.
  10.  
  11. Install the front wheel and lower the vehicle.
  12.  

Trucks
2-WHEEL DRIVE
  1. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands. Remove the front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Place a hydraulic jack under the lower control arm and raise to release the spring pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower ball joint cotter pins and loosen the nuts until they are flush with the top of the stud.
  6.  
  7. Using a tie rod end removing tool, disconnect the tie rod end from the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake caliper and hang by a wire as outlined in the Brakes section.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake rotor and backing plate as outlined in this Section.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the upper and lower ball joints as outlined in this Section.
  14.  
  15. Remove the knuckle/spindle assembly. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boots.

To install:

  1. Install the knuckle/spindle assembly into the ball joint studs. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boots.
  2.  
  3. Connect the upper and lower ball joints as outlined in this Section. Torque the nuts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm) and install new cotter pins.
  4.  
  5. Install the brake rotor and backing plate as outlined in this Section.
  6.  
  7. Install the brake caliper as outlined in the Brakes section.
  8.  
  9. Install the tie rod end and torque to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  10.  
  11. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle. Have the front end aligned by a qualified alignment technician.
  12.  

4-WHEEL DRIVE
  1. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands. Remove the front wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake caliper, rotor and backing plate as outlined in the Brakes section.
  4.  
  5. Place a hydraulic jack under the lower control arm and raise to release the spring pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper and lower ball joint cotter pins and loosen the nuts until they are flush with the top of the stud.
  8.  
  9. Using a tie rod end removing tool, disconnect the tie rod end from the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the upper and lower ball joints as outlined in this Section.
  12.  
  13. Remove the knuckle/spindle assembly. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boots.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the knuckle/spindle assembly. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boots.
  2.  
  3. Connect the upper and lower ball joints as outlined in this Section. Torque the nuts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm) and install new cotter pins.
  4.  
  5. Install the brake rotor and backing plate as outlined in this Section.
  6.  
  7. Install the brake caliper as outlined in the Brakes section.
  8.  
  9. Install the tie rod end and torque to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  10.  
  11. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle. Have the front end aligned by a qualified alignment technician.
