  3. Matchmark and remove the front driveshaft.
  4.
  5. Check the turning torque of the pinion before proceeding. This is the torque that must be reached during installation of the pinion nut.
  6.

NOTE
The amount of turning torque required to move the pinion gear should be 20 and 1930 ft. lbs. (27 and 1940 Nm) of torque.

  1. Using a pinion flange holding tool, remove the pinion nut and washer.
  2.
  3. Remove the pinion flange from the pinion gear.
  4.
  5. Pry the pinion seal out of the differential carrier.

  8.

To install:

  1. Using a seal driver tool, drive the new seal into the carrier until the flange on the seal is flush with the carrier.
  2.
  3. With the seal installed, the pinion bearing preload must be set.
  4.
  5. Tighten the pinion nut while holding the flange, until the turning torque is the same as before removal of the nut.
  6.
  7. Align the matchmarks and install the driveshaft.
  8.
  9. Check the level of the differential lubricant when finished.
