Leaf Springs

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle so the leaf springs are hanging freely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear shock absorbers.
  4.  
  5. Remove the parking brake cable clips.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nuts from the U-bolts holding the springs to the axle housing.
  8.  
  9. Support the rear axle housing to remove the weight of the axle housing from the springs.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front and rear shackle pin nuts.
  12.  
  13. Drive out the rear shackle pin by using a hammer and drift. Lower the rear end of the leaf spring assembly to the floor.
  14.  
  15. Drive out the front shackle pin and remove the leaf spring assembly rearward.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shackle pin from the rear spring bracket and remove the shackle.
  18.  
  19. Check the leaf springs for cracks, wear and broken leaves. Replace any leaves found to be cracked, broken, fatigued or seriously worn.
  20.  
  21. Check the shackles for bending and the pins for wear.
  22.  
  23. Check the U-bolts for distortion or other damage.

To install:

  1. Mount the shackle to the bracket.
  2.  
  3. Align the front end of the leaf spring assembly with the front bracket and install the shackle pin.
  4.  
  5. Align the rear end of the leaf spring assembly with the shackle and install the shackle pin.
  6.  
  7. Loosely install the shackle pin nuts and install the U-bolts. Tighten the U-bolt nuts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the shock absorbers.
  10.  
  11. Clip the parking brake cable to the bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the axle housing support and lower the vehicle so the weight is on the leaf springs.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the shackle pin nuts to 130 ft. lbs. (176 Nm).
