Ignition Lock/Switch

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
All Cars
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Using the steering wheel removal procedure, (as previously outlined), remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screws retaining the upper and lower steering column covers.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect all the electrical connectors.
  6.  
  7. On the RWD I-Mark models, remove the combination windshield wiper and washer switch by removing the two retaining screws. Then remove the combination turn signal, headlight dimmer and hazard warning switch by removing the two retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition lock cylinder housing by removing the snapring and washer, along with the lock cylinder housing retaining bolts on the column flange. On Impulse models, remove the ignition lock cylinder in position except for the LOCK position.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lock cylinder housing from the steering column shaft.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the lock cylinder housing to the steering column shaft.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition lock cylinder housing.
  4.  
  5. On the RWD I-Mark models, install the combination windshield wiper and washer switch by installing the two retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Connect all the electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Install the screws retaining the upper and lower steering column covers.
  10.  
  11. Install the steering wheel as previously outlined. Connect the battery cable and check operation.
  12.  

Trucks
SWITCH

The ignition switch is located on the lower right side of the dash.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and label the ignition switch wiring under the dashboard.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition switch locknut and the switch from the dash.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition switch to the dash and secure with the locknut.
  2.  
  3. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition switch.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

LOCK
  1. Remove the combination switch.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ignition lock-to-steering column clamp bolts and the ignition lock.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition lock to the steering column and secure with bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install the combination switch.
  4.  

P'up and Amigo
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. From the rear of the steering wheel, remove the horn pad screw and lift the horn pad upward to remove it.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel-to-steering column nut.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the steering wheel to the steering shaft for reinstallation purposes.
  8.  


NOTE
Never apply a blow to the steering wheel shaft with a hammer or other impact tool, to remove the steering wheel, for the steering shaft may become damaged.

  1. Using a steering wheel puller, press the steering wheel from the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Remove the contact ring.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column covers.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the electrical connector from the combination switch.
  8.  
  9. Remove the combination switch-to-steering column screws and the switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ignition lock/switch-to-steering column snapring and bushing.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition lock/switch assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition lock/switch-to-steering column bolts and the lock/switch assembly.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition lock/switch-to-steering column bolts, the bushing and the snapring.
  2.  
  3. Install the combination switch to the steering column and secure it with screws.
  4.  
  5. Connect the combination switch electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering column covers.
  8.  
  9. Install the contact ring.
  10.  
  11. Align the steering wheel-to-steering column matchmarks and torque the nut to 22 and 1929 ft. lbs.
  12.  
  13. Install the horn pad and the horn pad screw.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.
