Front Driveshaft & U-Joints

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Mark the front U-joint to the pinion yoke on the front differential.
  4.  
  5. Mark the relationship of the rear U-joint to the transfer case drive flange.
  6.  
  7. Mark the relationship of the rear U-joint to the transfer case drive flange.
  8.  
  9. Remove the retaining nuts and bolts from the drive flange.
  10.  
  11. Remove the clamps and retaining bolts from the front drive axle pinion flange.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front driveshaft from the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Using tape and or a rubber band, wrap the front U-joint bearing caps to ensure the caps do not separate from the U-joint.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Remove the tape or rubber band from the front U-joint
  2.  
  3. Install the front driveshaft.
  4.  
  5. Align the reference marks on the front U-joint.
    NOTE
    When installing the retaining bolts, only tighten them finger tight to hold the front driveshaft in position.

  6.  
  7. Install the front U-joint bolts and clamps.
  8.  
  9. Align the reference marks on the rear U-joint.
  10.  
  11. Install the driveshaft to pinion flange bolts. Tighten the bolts from the driveshaft to the pinion flange 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). Tighten the bolts for the front propeller U-joint clamps 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
